A console table makes a first impression. Placed in a hallway, behind a sofa or against a quiet wall, it adds a surface for lamps, keys and treasured pieces without taking up much floor space. Our console tables bring slim proportions and thoughtful finishes together, so even the narrowest spaces feel considered and welcoming.

Finding the right fit

Measure the space before you choose. In a hallway, a slim depth keeps the walkway clear, so check the width of your corridor and leave comfortable room to pass. Behind a sofa, look for a console that sits at or just below the height of the sofa back and is a little shorter than the sofa itself for a balanced look. For a more relaxed, characterful feel, browse our rustic console tables.

Where to use a console table

Console tables are wonderfully versatile. In an entrance they give you a landing spot for post and keys, in a living room they frame a sofa or fill an empty wall, and on a landing or in a bedroom they can work as a slim dressing table or display surface. Designs with a lower shelf or drawers add useful storage for baskets, books and everyday essentials.

Styling ideas

Build your display around a focal point. A mirror or artwork hung above creates height, while a pair of lamps gives a symmetrical, classic feel. Add a bowl for keys, a stack of books and something living, such as fresh stems or a potted plant. Baskets or stools tucked beneath make good use of the space below.

Looking after your console table

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, and use mats or coasters under lamps, vases and anything that might mark the surface. Keep your table out of direct sunlight and away from radiators where possible, and it will stay beautiful for many years.
