Wall lighting does something table lamps and overhead fittings cannot: it places light close to the wall at the height people stand, casting warmth and shadow rather than simply illuminating. Hang the centre at 150cm to 165cm from the floor in a hallway, or 120cm to 140cm beside a bed so the shade sits below eye level when you are sitting up. A pair either side of a mirror lights a face from both sides rather than above, which is the most useful lighting arrangement in a house. Allow 90cm between centres so the pools of light read as two rather than one.
