Wrenbury Ceramic Table Lamp

The base is pierced, and it changes what the lamp does when it is lit.

Bands of small perforations run around the lower half of the ceramic. Unlit, they read as texture, a horizontal rhythm that catches the light across a glazed surface. Lit, they let light escape through the base itself, so you get a soft glow at table height as well as the pool of light from the shade above.

That matters because most table lamps light one thing: the surface beneath them and the wall behind. A lamp that also glows at its own base holds a dark corner far better, which is exactly what you want from a lamp on a sideboard at the far end of a room.

The form is a demijohn shape, wide and rounded at the bottom, drawing into a narrow neck. It is a generous, slightly rustic silhouette that stops a large lamp looking severe, and the soft cream glaze keeps it quiet.

Above it sits a natural linen drum shade. Linen diffuses light more warmly than a synthetic shade and lets a little through the weave itself, which softens the edge of the light pool rather than cutting it hard.

It is also properly weighted at 8.98kg. A tall lamp on a light base is a lamp waiting to be knocked over. This one stays where you put it.

This is a large lamp. A typical table lamp is 45cm to 55cm tall. At 80cm this is closer to a floor lamp in presence, and it needs a surface and a wall that can carry it.

Check the height above your surface. On a 75cm console, the top of the shade lands at about 155cm from the floor. Under a low shelf, a wall-mounted mirror or a sloping ceiling, measure before you order.

Check the surface depth too. A 45cm shade overhangs a narrow console. You want a surface of at least 40cm deep, ideally more, or the shade will sit proud of the front edge.

On a bedside table it will be tall. That can be deliberate and looks striking in a large bedroom, but on a compact bedside it will dominate. For most bedsides, a lamp of 45cm to 60cm suits better.

The pierced base earns its keep in the corner that overhead lighting never reaches. A sideboard at the far end of a living room, or the end of a long hallway.

A warm dimmable E27 at 2400K to 2700K is what makes a lamp like this work. Cool white light on a cream glaze turns it grey and kills the whole effect.

Two matching lamps at either end of a long console or sideboard is the single most reliable piece of styling there is. Symmetry does the work for you.

Beside a chair, the bottom of the shade wants to sit at roughly eye level when you are seated, around 100cm to 110cm from the floor. Too high and you see the bulb.

Glazed ceramic and linen both want something rough nearby. A basket, a timber surface or a jute rug stops a neutral corner looking flat.

A lamp this size needs space around it. Crowding it with small objects makes both look worse. One low bowl or a stack of books is enough.

It takes an E27 screw fitting, the standard large screw bulb, up to a maximum of 60W. A bulb is not included, which is normal for lighting at this level and means you choose the light rather than inheriting it.

Go warm. 2400K to 2700K. Anything cooler makes a cream glaze look grey and a linen shade look washed out. This is the single most important decision you will make about this lamp, and it costs a few pounds.

Go dimmable if the socket or a plug-in dimmer allows it. A lamp with a pierced base is at its best turned low in the evening.

On brightness, 400 to 600 lumens is usually right for ambient light from a lamp this size. Higher than that and you are lighting a task, not a room.

A note on LED wattage. The 60W maximum refers to traditional bulbs. An LED drawing 8W to 10W gives roughly equivalent light and runs far cooler, which is the sensible choice inside a ceramic base.

Dust the ceramic with a soft dry cloth. The pierced banding will collect dust in the perforations, and a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment on low clears it quickly.

The linen shade takes a lint roller or a soft brush, working around it in one direction. Never wet a linen shade.

Switch off and let it cool before changing a bulb or cleaning around the fitting.

Lift it from the base, never by the neck or the shade. At nearly 9kg the weight is all in the ceramic.

Interior use only. IP20 means no protection against water, so it is not suitable for a bathroom, a conservatory that gets damp, or anywhere outdoors.

What to expect. Small variations in a ceramic glaze, and slight differences in the weave of a natural linen shade, are characteristics of the materials rather than faults.
