The height is what makes it work behind a sofa. It sits above most sofa backs, which is what turns it into a room divider in an open plan space rather than a table pushed against furniture. Check your sofa back against 89.5cm, and that the sofa can be pulled far enough off the wall to take the depth behind it.

In a hallway, give it the longest uninterrupted stretch and leave at least 90cm of walking room in front.

Measure your route, not just your wall. At this width and weight it cannot be manoeuvred around an obstacle the way a lighter piece can. Check doorways, hallway width, stairwells and any tight turns before ordering, and tell us if anything looks close.

Most console tables are compromises. Narrow because hallways are narrow, light because they need moving, uniform because uniformity is cheaper.

The hand-applied distress makes no attempt to look perfect. Applied table by table, it never repeats itself, which is why it reads as genuine age. Machine distressing gives itself away within a few feet, because the same mark lands in the same place on every unit made that week.

Solid acacia is the second reason. A dense hardwood with rich varied grain and a high oil content, giving it real resistance to knocks and moisture, which is why it is used for chopping boards and outdoor furniture as well as fine interior pieces. Because it is solid throughout rather than veneer over board, the grain continues through the piece and the edges will not chip or lift over the years.

Then the ornate turned balustrade legs. Shaped individually, with a depth of profile that pressed or moulded alternatives never match. They draw the eye downward and give the piece an architectural quality four plain posts never contribute.

Knots and grain variation are left where they fell rather than sanded away or filled, so no two are identical and yours will not match the photograph exactly.

A room with a long empty wall always feels unfinished, and small furniture makes the problem worse rather than better. This solves it in one move: it fills the horizontal, gives the eye somewhere to rest and immediately makes the rest of the room look intentional.

Behind a sofa it creates a defined zone in an open plan space, which is the hardest thing to achieve in a room without walls. In a hallway it turns a corridor into a landing point, somewhere for a lamp, a mirror and the small ritual of arriving home. Against a dining room wall it becomes a serving surface for entertaining and a display surface the rest of the year.

Seasonally it is quietly adaptable. Foliage and stoneware in spring, a shallow bowl of fruit and linen through summer, dried grasses and candlelight in autumn, and in December it takes garlands and candles along its length better than almost any other piece of furniture in a house.

A console this long rewards planning. Style it in three groups rather than spreading objects evenly across the width, and it will look considered rather than arranged.

The single most effective thing you can do with a long console. A matching pair of table lamps frames the piece, creates symmetry and gives you low warm light in the evening. Warm bulbs at 2400K to 2700K, since cooler light flattens a distressed finish completely.

Lamp at one end, then a cluster of ceramics and foliage at varying heights, then a stack of books with one small object on top. Leave clear space between the groups.

Two large baskets or a run of trays, rather than filling the second tier end to end.

Warm distressed acacia sits beautifully against soft white, oatmeal, putty, mushroom and stone. For depth, sage, deep olive or soft charcoal behind it will make the amber tones glow. Avoid cool grey and stark white, which drain warmth from distressed wood and push it towards orange.

Distressed acacia is warm and matt. Aged brass, dark glazed stoneware, linen and a wool or jute rug underfoot provide the contrast that stops a neutral room reading flat. One rough texture, one polished, one matt is the rule we use.

A large mirror or a trio of artwork. A long low piece against an empty wall always looks bottom heavy.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit, and use mats or coasters under anything hot or wet.

Refresh with a clear furniture wax once or twice a year to keep the finish nourished and deepen the tone. Avoid silicone polishes and all-purpose sprays, which build up on a waxed surface and dull it.

Keep it clear of a radiator where you can, since prolonged dry heat is harder on solid timber than anything else in a normal home.

What to expect. Colour and character vary from the photographs, and small marks blend into the existing distressing rather than standing out. That is one of the quiet advantages of an antique finish over a flawless one.
