The 40cm depth is the figure that matters. It is noticeably slimmer than a sideboard, which is precisely why it fits hallways where a deeper piece will not. Keep at least 90cm of walking room in front so the corridor still functions.

It is lighter than most solid timber pieces this size, which matters more than people expect when a delivery has to come up a staircase or round a tight turn. It is still a two person lift.

Console tables usually fail in one of two directions: all leg and no use, or practical and entirely forgettable.

The two drawers are what most consoles miss. An open console gives you somewhere to put things down and nowhere to put them away, which is why hallway tables end up buried. These take keys, post, chargers and remotes, so the surface above stays as considered as it looks. The lower shelf handles the larger things: books, a trailing plant, two woven baskets.

Reclaimed elm is the second reason. Elm is a hardwood with a wandering, interlocking grain that gives it both a distinctive look and a natural resistance to splitting, with warmer undertones than oak and considerably more variation board to board. Salvaged elm brings all of that plus decades of accumulated patination, a depth of colour that develops through handling and light rather than any finishing process. It is why this looks settled from the first day.

Genuinely salvaged, too. A great deal of what is sold as reclaimed is new timber distressed to look old, and manufactured wear always repeats itself, which gives it away within a few feet. Real age never does.

Because it is solid timber rather than veneer over board, the grain continues through the piece, the edges will not chip or lift over the years, and it can be sanded and refinished decades from now if it ever needs to be. The turned pedestal legs are shaped individually, with a depth of profile pressed alternatives never match, and they keep the piece visually light despite its width.

Hallways are neglected because there is rarely space for anything substantial, so people settle for something small and apologetic, and the entrance to the house ends up saying nothing at all. A slim, wide console solves exactly that. It gives a corridor genuine presence without narrowing it.

In a living room it works behind a sofa in an open plan space, defining a zone where there are no walls to do it. In a dining room it serves as a sideboard alternative for rooms too narrow for one, taking glassware and linens in the drawers with serving space on top. In a bedroom it becomes a wide dressing table with a mirror above.

Seasonally the weathered elm flatters almost anything. Foliage and pale stoneware in spring, linen and a bowl of fruit through summer, dried grasses and candlelight in autumn, and along its length it takes a garland and a run of candles in December better than almost any other piece in a house.

A hallway console is the first thing people see and the last thing most people style properly. Get it right and the whole house reads as considered.

A matching pair of table lamps frames the piece and gives you a low warm welcome in the evening, which is the single best thing you can do for a hallway. If space is tight, one lamp off centre with a wall light above works just as well. Warm bulbs at 2400K to 2700K, since cool light flattens a weathered finish completely.

Lamp and a small tray at one end, a cluster of ceramics and foliage at the other. Keep the middle relatively clear so there is somewhere to actually put things down.

On the lower shelf, two large baskets beat a scattering of small things every time.

Weathered elm reads warm and mid toned, so soft white, oatmeal, putty, mushroom and stone let the timber lead. For depth, deep olive, sage or soft charcoal behind it will make the grain glow. Cool grey and stark white both drain the warmth from reclaimed timber.

A long runner echoes the horizontal of the console and makes a corridor read considerably wider than it is. Aged brass, dark stoneware and linen give the warm matt timber its contrast.

A large mirror doubles the light, adds height and gives you somewhere to check yourself on the way out. The most useful pairing there is.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit. Use mats and coasters under anything hot or wet.

Refresh with a clear furniture wax once or twice a year to nourish the timber and deepen the tone. Avoid silicone polishes and all-purpose sprays, which build up on a waxed surface and dull it.

Keep it clear of a radiator. Prolonged dry heat is harder on solid timber than anything else in a normal home, and hallway radiators are easy to overlook when positioning a piece.

What to expect. Grain, knots, tonal shifts and the pattern of weathering differ from piece to piece because the timber is genuinely reclaimed. Yours will not match the photographs exactly. That variation is the material working as intended, and it is the reason it looks collected rather than bought.
