An additional pair at the centre gives the table the structural support it needs across the length, and more than that, it gives the front elevation a rhythm. The alternating pattern of turned uprights reads as architectural in a way four legs never manage, and it is what stops a long console looking like a plank on posts.

Salvaged pine is the other half of it. New pine, however well finished, cannot replicate the depth of grain, the warm amber tones or the character timber carries from a previous life.

The natural finish is deliberately light-handed, preserving the organic variation across each plank rather than concealing it, so the surface reads as authentically aged rather than manufactured to look old. Grain variation, knots and tonal differences between planks are inherent to salvaged wood, which means no two are identical and yours will not match the photograph exactly.

The six turned uprights are the reason to buy this, so keep the lower shelf sparse. Two baskets with a gap between them rather than a full run, and nothing tall enough to obscure the leg line from the front.

A matching pair of table lamps frames a long console and gives you low warm light in a hallway. Warm bulbs at 2400K to 2700K, since cool light flattens a natural pine finish completely.

Lamp, a cluster of ceramics and foliage at varying heights, then a stack of books with something small on top. Clear space between the groups so the surface still functions.

Warm amber pine wants warm neutrals: soft white, oatmeal, clay and mushroom. For depth, olive, sage or soft charcoal behind it will make the grain glow. Cool grey drains the warmth and pushes the pine towards orange.

A large mirror or a run of three framed pieces. A long low piece against an empty wall always looks bottom heavy, and a mirror in a hallway doubles what little light there is.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth, and wipe spills straight away. Salvaged pine is more absorbent than a lacquered new-wood surface, and a light natural finish offers less of a barrier than a heavy one.

Use coasters and mats under anything hot or wet. A ring left overnight on a lightly finished pine is a ring you keep.

Refresh with a clear furniture wax once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Avoid silicone polishes and all-purpose sprays, which build up and dull the surface.

Keep it clear of a radiator where you can, and out of prolonged direct sun, which lightens timber unevenly.

What to expect. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak. On a piece already defined by knots and grain variation those marks blend into the character rather than standing out.
