All four compartments have adjustable shelving, so the sideboard adapts to what you own rather than dictating it. Set the shelves low and wide for dinnerware and serving platters, tall for glassware and decanters, or remove one entirely for table linens, board games or media equipment.

A whitewashed finish is more forgiving than warm timber and sits with cool and warm schemes alike. Natural wood, linen upholstery, stoneware ceramics and aged brass all work. Give it something with depth nearby, though, or a pale piece against a pale wall disappears.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth. The parquet has more edges and joints than a flat door, so a soft brush clears the chevron grooves faster than a cloth does.

Wipe spills straight away. Fir is a softwood and a pale finish shows a water mark more readily than a dark stain would.

Use coasters and mats under anything hot or wet, and avoid silicone polishes and all-purpose sprays.

Keep it clear of a radiator where you can, and out of prolonged direct sun, which lightens a whitewashed finish unevenly.

What to expect. Each piece differs slightly in grain pattern, finish and shape because the parquet is laid by hand. Fir is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak. These are the characteristics of handmade solid wood rather than faults, and yours will not match the photograph exactly.
