Why the height matters. At 51cm it sits at seat height, so it works as a footstool, low side table or occasional perch as well as a chest.

Capacity. It holds roughly the volume of two large laundry baskets. The lid lifts off rather than hinging, so allow room to set it down beside the chest.

Dust the weave with a soft brush, or a vacuum brush attachment on low. Never soak the rattan; a barely damp cloth on a mark, dried straight away, is enough. Condition the leather once or twice a year.

Keep it away from damp, shower zones and conservatories that get condensation. Line it with fabric if you are storing delicate linens or knitwear. Rattan varies in tone across the weave, and the leather darkens with age.

Place it beside a sofa or armchair, not in a corner, with a tray on top to make a proper surface. Drape a throw over one corner and set it on a wool or jute rug.

Echo the tan leather elsewhere, in a timber surface or a brass lamp base. At the end of a bed it doubles as a bench, and a pair either side of a sofa looks especially considered.
