Building a room piece by piece
Start with the largest piece in any room and work outward. In a dining room that's the table, with chairs and a sideboard chosen to complement. In a living room it's usually the sofa, with a coffee table sized to roughly two thirds of its length and a console table or sideboard against the longest free wall. In a bedroom it's the bed, with bedside tables level with the top of the mattress and a chest of drawers proportioned to the room.
