Doormats

Morris's boldest leaf, laid at your door

Great scrolling acanthus leaves, the classical motif William Morris made entirely his own, printed across hard-wearing natural coir. Generous in pattern, practical underfoot, it gives the front door the confidence of a beautifully dressed home.

Will it fit? At 75cm wide it sits neatly in front of a standard single front door, and its slim 1.3cm profile clears most doors that open inwards.

Materials and design

A dense natural coir pile, the classic doormat fibre, chosen because its stiff bristles brush away mud and grit far better than softer weaves.

Acanthus is one of the most recognisable designs in the Morris & Co archive: large, curling leaves layered with real depth. On a doormat the bold scale reads beautifully from the garden path.

Care

Shake out or vacuum regularly, and use a stiff brush to lift trapped grit. Spot clean with a damp cloth and let it dry flat before putting it back down.

Honest expectations: coir naturally sheds a few loose fibres in the first weeks, which settles with use. On a very busy doorstep the print will soften over time, which only adds to its lived-in charm. It lasts longest in a covered porch or just inside the door.

Styling and pairs well with

The strong pattern loves a simple setting: a heritage painted door, a pair of terracotta pots or a single olive tree beside it. Inside, add a basket for boots and a mirror for that last glance on the way out.

Questions

Can it go outside?

Yes, coir is naturally tough. For the longest life, keep it in a covered porch or under a canopy, and if it does get soaked, let it dry flat.

Is it good for muddy boots and dogs?

That is exactly what coir does best. The stiff fibres scrape away mud and grit so less of it reaches your floors.

Will it shed?

A little at first, as all natural coir does. Shake it out for the first few weeks and it soon settles.

Does it make a good gift?

A lovely one. It is a perfect housewarming present for anyone who loves William Morris.
