Top: fresh fig, softly sweet and bright. Heart: green herbal leaves, which keep it sunlit rather than sugary. Base: creamy woods, warm and rounded. It smells like the fig tree, not the jam.

A square glass bottle with a solid marble lid, cut from natural stone, so the veining varies from piece to piece. Its weight keeps it steady on a busy console. The fibre reeds wick more evenly than rattan and won't clog.

Reeds. Fan them out wide and turn them every week or so, dry end down.

Placement. Stand it on a tray, away from direct sun and radiators. Keep the oil off polished and painted surfaces, and out of reach of children and pets.

Marble. Wipe with a dry cloth only, with no acidic or household sprays. Lift the bottle from the base, not the lid.

What to expect. The scent is strongest in the first fortnight, then settles to a softer level. The bottle isn't designed to be refilled.

Set it on a hallway console, where scent sets the tone before coats come off. Make it the tall element in a group of three, with a low bowl and a table lamp, all gathered on a tray.
