Gourd Lidded Serving Dish

Will it fit? At 26cm tall with the lid on, it has real presence on a laid table, so set it slightly off centre to keep sightlines clear. At 2.9kg, carry the base with both hands when full.

Glazed stoneware in a gourd form. Ribbed lines run down the lid like the segments of a squash, finishing in a curled stem that acts as the handle, and the base is scalloped to match, so it looks finished with the lid off too.

The reactive glaze pools and runs in mottled bands of sand, oatmeal and pale cream, deeper in the ribs and lighter over the raised segments. It moves in the kiln, so every piece is unique.

Dishwasher safe; wash the lid and base separately so they don't knock each other. Microwave safe for reheating, with the lid removed first, and use a cloth to lift it as stoneware holds heat.

This is a serving dish rather than cookware, so it is not for the oven or hob. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as filling it straight from the fridge with something boiling. Lift the lid gently, as the curled stem is the most delicate point. Expect the depth and placement of the mottling to vary from piece to piece.

Bring roast vegetables, a gratin or a stew to the table with the lid on, or use the scalloped base alone as a salad or side bowl. Empty and lidded, it sits beautifully on a kitchen island, open shelf or sideboard, and makes a natural centrepiece from September through to Christmas with candles and a little foliage.

Keep the crockery around it simple and add warm timber, linen and stone. Smaller pieces from our bowls and dishes collection work well alongside.

Can I serve food in it?

Yes. It is food safe, dishwasher safe and microwave safe, made to be used as well as admired.

Can I cook in it?

No. Although it borrows a tagine like silhouette, it is a serving dish, not for the oven or hob. Cook in a pan and transfer.

Does the lid keep food warm?

It helps keep the heat in on the way from kitchen to table.

Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

Very close, but the reactive glaze runs differently on every piece, so the mottling will vary slightly.
