A slim oak board left raw and untreated, so the grain reads openly and gently warms with age. Oil or wax it for a deeper tone, or leave it pale.

The cast iron brackets are the feature, scrolled in the spirit of Victorian ironwork and finishing in a rounded terminal beneath the front edge. The bracket profiles differ slightly between the two sizes.

Wall fixings are not included, as the right screw and plug depend on your wall. For plasterboard, use heavy duty anchors rated well above your intended load, or fix into the studs. The load it can carry depends on your wall and fixings, so do not rely on plasterboard alone for heavy items.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry. Keep abrasives away from the cast iron. Best avoided in bathrooms, as steam can mark raw oak and cause cast iron to surface rust unless the timber is sealed and the room well ventilated.

Line it with cookbooks and jars in a kitchen, stack books and a trailing plant in an alcove, or display frames and ceramics in a bedroom. Natural oak and dark iron sit as easily in a period home as a modern one.
