The Birkdale Mirror is built around a frame of genuine birch bark, layered in overlapping strips around the full circumference of the 1.16m round and finished with a softly distressed antique-gilt inner lip that frames the glass. The bark carries the natural striations, knots and tonal shifts of the original tree — silver-grey woven with deep gold and bronze, with the irregularity of a found material rather than the uniformity of a printed one. The whole piece reads as something that has been collected from a forest and quietly finished by hand, rather than manufactured.
