Will it fit? Above a console or mantel, leave 20cm to 25cm between the furniture and the bottom of the mirror. At 70cm wide it suits a console of about 95cm to 105cm. On an empty wall, centre it around 145cm to 155cm from the floor, and remember the ledge projects 8cm in a narrow hallway.

Frame: paulownia wood, which is why a mirror this size weighs only 5.4kg. A run of small carved beads gives the frame a shadow line, and the sculpted crest is the traditional detail that lets it sit happily in a period house.

Finish: a lightly distressed soft grey, aged rather than heavily antiqued. The distressing is applied by hand, so variation in the grey, the wear at the edges and the grain is character rather than a fault.

Hanging: it needs proper fixings, not a nail. Use masonry plugs, a stud, or plasterboard anchors rated well above 5.4kg, and two fixing points rather than one. Check for pipes and cables before drilling. Please ask us to confirm which fittings are supplied.

Spray glass cleaner onto a microfibre cloth, never onto the mirror, so nothing runs into the frame. Dust the beading with a dry cloth or a soft paintbrush.

Nothing wet or abrasive on the frame, as the distressed finish is a surface treatment. Interior rooms only, and not a steamy bathroom. Check the fixings once a year.

Centre it above one of our console tables with a lamp to one side, so the light rakes across the beading. Keep the ledge to a single candle from our candles or a stem from faux greenery.

Will it hang on plasterboard?

Yes, with care. At 5.4kg it should go into a stud where possible, or onto proper plasterboard anchors rated well above the weight. Standard push-in plugs are not suitable.

Can it be hung landscape?

No. The crest is designed to sit at the top and the ledge at the bottom, so it is a portrait piece.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

We would not recommend it. The frame is natural timber with a painted finish, and steam is not kind to either. Interior rooms only.

Can I lean it rather than hang it?

On a wide, sturdy dresser or chest, yes. Secure it to the wall behind regardless, particularly with children or animals in the house.
