A generously proportioned lamp. Allow a surface at least 40cm deep.

Check the depth of your surface. A shade this wide will overhang a narrow console, so measure before ordering. Anything under 40cm deep and the shade sits proud of the front edge.

On a console. This is the right scale for a console of 100cm or more. On a long console or sideboard, a matching pair at either end is the single most effective thing you can do with the surface.

Bedside height. The bottom of the shade should sit at roughly shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed, which usually means a bedside table of 55cm to 65cm. Too low and the bulb is in your eyeline when reading.

Reach a socket. The flex is generous but not unlimited. Measure from where the lamp will stand to the nearest socket before you order.

The speckle is in the glaze, not on it.

No two bases are identical. The flecking distributes differently across every piece, because it is worked into the glaze rather than printed on the surface. That gives it depth when light catches at an angle, and it gives each lamp a subtle individuality that a printed finish cannot replicate.

The ceramic has real weight and solidity, which is why it sits with confidence on a bedside or a busy console rather than needing careful handling every time you reach past it.

The natural linen shade is not an afterthought. Linen has enough weave irregularity to soften a bulb without dimming it, and it warms the tone of the light as it passes through. That is the difference between a room that is lit and a room that is atmospheric.

This matters more than anything else on this page. Fit a warm bulb at 2400K to 2700K. Anything cooler turns linen grey and drains the warmth straight out of the ceramic. Maximum 60W, and an LED equivalent is what we would use.

Symmetry is what makes a console or sideboard look considered. Two matching lamps at either end frames the surface and gives you low warm light from two points rather than one.

The rule our stylists use. A table lamp, something low at floor or shelf level, and an overhead you rarely switch on. A single ceiling fitting is what makes a room feel like an office in the evening.

Warm sandy ceramic wants warm neutrals. Off white, oatmeal, clay, mushroom and putty. Against a deeper olive or charcoal wall the speckle reads beautifully. Cool grey is the one to avoid, as it turns the sandy tone muddy.

Give ceramic something to play against. A stack of books, a tray, a dark glazed vessel from pots and vases, and something living or faux from potted plants and trees. Group at varying heights rather than in a line.

If you are buying two, order them at the same time so the speckle and the linen come from the same batch.

Dust the ceramic base weekly with a soft dry cloth. It will take a barely damp cloth on a mark, dried straight after.

Never use water or cleaning spray on the linen shade. Water marks a fabric shade permanently. A soft dry brush, a lint roller or a hairdryer on the cool setting is all it needs, monthly.

Switch off and let the bulb cool before changing it or cleaning near the shade.

Interior rooms only. Not for a bathroom, or a conservatory that gets condensation.

What to expect. The speckle pattern varies between lamps, and over years the linen softens very slightly in tone with light exposure. Both are characteristics of hand-finished natural materials rather than faults.
