Chevron parquet doors. Each panel is cut and laid by hand, a detail borrowed from classic European wood-block floors, so no two pieces are identical.

Four compartments with adjustable shelving take dinnerware, glassware, linens or media equipment. Tapered solid wood legs lift the piece off the floor.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth, and use a soft brush for the chevron grooves. Wipe spills straight away, use coasters and mats, and avoid silicone polishes and all-purpose sprays. Keep it away from radiators and strong direct sun.

Fir is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak, and a pale finish shows water marks more than a dark one. Grain and finish vary because the parquet is laid by hand.

Keep the top restrained so the doors lead. Place a pair of table lamps at either end to rake light across the parquet in the evening, add one substantial vase off centre, and hang a large mirror or art above.

It suits Scandinavian, coastal and modern country schemes, with linen, stoneware and aged brass. Add something with depth nearby so it does not disappear against a pale wall.
