Put five beautiful objects on a worktop in a row and it looks like storage. Put two of them 5cm higher and it looks arranged.

That is the whole principle, and it is the single thing that separates a professionally styled surface from a domestic one. A riser creates a back layer, so the eye reads depth rather than a line. Without it, everything sits on one plane and even expensive pieces flatten out.

Elm is chosen specifically because it is naturally dense and smooth-grained. The surface is genuinely beautiful to look at and to place things on, not merely functional. That matters on a piece which is, by design, mostly hidden behind whatever stands on it. The parts you do see have to hold up.

The warm amber tones complement ceramic, rattan, natural wood, linen and stone without competing with any of them, which makes the riser an almost invisible styling tool. It lifts whatever is on it without asking for attention itself.

Under wall units. At only 5cm the riser lifts your coffee machine or kettle without pushing it into the cupboard above. Measure your clearance and add 5cm before committing.

On a shelf. Check the shelf depth against 25cm. On a narrow floating shelf the board may overhang, which defeats the point.

Two together. On a long run of worktop, two boards at either end give you a symmetry that reads as deliberate.

Elevate a coffee machine, ceramics or spice jars above worktop level. The coffee station is the most popular use by a distance, and it is the one that turns a functional corner into something worth looking at. Pair with kitchen accessories and crockery that deserve to be out.

Create a back layer for a vase or a lamp, with a bowl or a tray in front. This is the classic two-tier arrangement and it works on any surface over a metre long.

Add tiered dimension to book and ceramic displays. Lay books flat beneath and stand pieces from bowls and dishes on the riser above.

Two or three objects on an 80cm riser, not eight. The empty length is what makes the arrangement read as considered rather than crowded.

A riser is meant to be a supporting act. If people notice the board before what is on it, something is over-styled. Warm elm against warm ceramics is exactly the right level of quiet.

Three objects at three different heights beats four at the same level, every time. The riser gives you one of those levels for free.

Because it is light and unfixed, the riser is the piece you move rather than replace. Foliage and pale ceramics in spring, candles and dried stems in autumn, and the board stays put.

Rustic elm. A hardwood with a wandering, interlocking grain, denser and smoother than pine, with warmer undertones than oak. It is the timber's own character on show rather than a finish applied over it.

Natural rustic finish. Warm amber and honey tones with genuine tonal variation across the board. No paint, no laminate, nothing concealing what it is.

Low profile. At 5cm the board is deliberately restrained. A taller riser starts to look like a plinth, and a shorter one does not create enough separation to register.

Because this is real timber, grain, knots and tone differ from board to board. Each piece is subtly individual, which is the point rather than a fault.

Everyday care. Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth. Wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit, since timber is absorbent.

Use coasters or a liner. Under anything wet, oily or hot. A coffee machine drip tray, a bottle of oil or a hot pan will mark timber, and on a piece this size the mark will be visible.

Not a chopping board. Worth saying plainly, since it looks like one. This is a display riser, so put food on a board or a dish rather than directly on the surface.

Bathroom use. Fine on a dry vanity, less so directly beside a shower. Persistent humidity is hard on unsealed timber over time.

Refresh with wax. A clear furniture wax occasionally keeps the elm nourished and deepens the tone. Avoid silicone sprays and all purpose polishes.
