On a console. Place it at one end rather than centred, and balance the other end with a lamp. Symmetry on a console is harder to pull off than most people expect, and an off-centre urn almost always reads better.

Beside a fireplace. One of the best homes for a piece like this. Terracotta against stone or brick is a pairing that has worked for a very long time.

On the floor. At 33cm it is substantial enough to sit at the foot of a bookcase or beside a hearth rather than on a surface at all, which is worth considering if your shelves are already full.

The 5kg matters. Check that a floating shelf or a lightweight console can genuinely take it before you place it there.

Genuinely. The silhouette and the handles are the piece, and an empty urn reads as sculpture rather than as a vase waiting for flowers. This is the option our stylists reach for most.

Dried grasses, pampas or bare branches suit the antiqued finish far better than fresh florals do. Keep the arrangement taller than the urn, roughly one and a half times its height, so the proportions read correctly.

Warm terracotta wants warm neutrals. Off white, oatmeal, clay and mushroom. Against a deep olive or charcoal wall the form reads beautifully as silhouette. Cool grey fights the orange undertone and is the one to avoid.

Terracotta. Fired clay, one of the oldest materials in the home, and still unmatched for warmth of tone. It is porous by nature, which is what gives it that matt, sun-baked surface and also why it should not hold water directly.

Because the finish is applied by hand, tone and texture vary from piece to piece. Small marks and irregularities are characteristic of terracotta and part of the intended look rather than faults.

Not suitable for holding water directly. Terracotta is porous, so water will seep through and mark the surface it sits on. For fresh or living arrangements, place a small waterproof vessel or a jam jar inside.

Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Avoid water, cleaning sprays and anything abrasive, all of which will lift the antiqued finish.

Protect the surface below. A felt pad or a coaster under the base is worth adding on polished timber or marble, both because of the 5kg weight and because unglazed terracotta has a slightly rough foot.

Handle with two hands. The handles are architectural rather than structural, and 5kg of fired clay does not survive a drop.

Interior use. Terracotta left outside through a British winter will crack when trapped moisture freezes. Keep it indoors.
