A dining table is the one piece of furniture in a house that is genuinely used. The Abingdon is built accordingly: 200cm long by 100cm wide in solid elm, with a thick squared edge, four straight legs and a stretcher running between them. The width matters as much as the length here, because a full metre leaves room for serving dishes down the centre without anyone losing their plate to a platter. At 76cm tall it sits at standard dining height, so any chair will work with it. The elm is left with an open, softly limed grain that takes marks and years gracefully, and it arrives fully assembled.

The straight leg is the design. There is no taper, no turn and no ornament: four squared posts, a stretcher between them, a thick top. That restraint is what lets a table this large sit in a room without dominating it, and it is also why the piece reads as honest joinery rather than styling. Practically, the legs are set in from the corners, which means chairs pull in along the sides rather than colliding with a leg at every place setting. Elm gives it the character that a design this plain needs — a looser, more expressive grain than oak, warmer in tone, with knots and movement across a two metre top that no two tables will share. The stretcher base is structural rather than decorative, which is what keeps a table of this span rigid under a full load.
