Amber Ombre Ribbed Glass Vase | Short

2.56kg for a 21cm vessel. That is thick glass, not a light one.

A 14cm opening takes a full bunch as it comes, without thinning it down. It also suits a few structural stems, dried grasses or branches, which is often the better look in a short wide cylinder.

Stem length. Aim for around 30cm from the rim upward, roughly one and a half times the vase height. Anything much taller looks top-heavy on a short body.

The weight is the useful part. Short vases go over easily when filled; at 2.56kg empty this stays put with water and stems in it.

It also works as a hurricane. A pillar candle inside a cylinder this heavy is safe and, with the ribbing, considerably better lit than a plain glass one.

The ombré and the ribbing are doing the same job from two directions.

The colour runs from deep amber at the rim down to clear at the base, so the vessel appears to lift off the surface rather than sit heavily on it. A flat coloured glass is a block; a graduated one has movement built in before you put anything in it.

The vertical ribbing then refracts that colour differently along every channel. Each rib catches light at its own angle, so the amber shifts between bright and deep as you move around the vase or as the light changes through the day.

Together they do something plain coloured glass cannot: the vase reads differently at every hour. Backlit by morning sun it glows; under lamplight in the evening it goes rich and dark.

2.56kg is genuinely heavy for this size, which means thick walls rather than thin blown glass. It is why the colour has depth and why the vase feels substantial in the hand.

This is the whole point of coloured glass. On a windowsill, near a window or backlit by a lamp, the ombré and the ribbing both come alive. Against a solid wall in a dark corner you lose most of what you paid for.

A pillar candle inside a ribbed amber cylinder throws light through every channel. On a dining table in the evening it is arguably better than as a vase.

Glass looks best in company. Two or three vessels at different heights on a tray or a console, with something opaque among them so the group is not all transparent.

Against warm amber, green foliage reads better than coloured blooms, which compete. Eucalyptus, olive or dried grasses from faux flowers and greenery.

A woven tray under a group of glass gives the arrangement a border and stops a heavy base marking a polished surface.

Hand wash only. A dishwasher will dull a coloured glass finish over time and a vase this heavy is awkward in a rack anyway. Warm water, washing-up liquid and a bottle brush.

For stubborn residue, half fill with warm water, add a spoonful of uncooked rice and swirl. The rice scours the inside where a brush will not reach.

Change the water every two days with fresh flowers and re-cut the stems. Clear glass at the base means the waterline is visible, so there is no hiding a cloudy vase.

Avoid sudden temperature changes. Do not pour boiling water into cold glass, which is how thick glass cracks.

Lift it from the body, not the rim, especially when full. 2.56kg plus water is a serious weight.

What to expect. The ombré transition sits slightly differently on every piece, and faint seams or tiny bubbles within the glass are characteristics of made glass rather than faults.
