A chalk-glazed stoneware board with a softly uneven edge — made to carry cheese and charcuterie to the table, and to be left leaning against the wall afterwards.
The Amberley is the piece that does two jobs beautifully. A rectangular stoneware serving board finished in a chalk-coloured reactive glaze, with gently irregular edges and a generous cut-out handle at one end. Its long, narrow proportions — 45cm end to end — were made for the centre of a dining table: a run of cheeses, sliced charcuterie, figs and grapes, or a warm loaf and a dish of oil. The handle makes it easy to carry through from the kitchen with one hand, and hooks over a rail or peg for storage. When it isn't in use it earns its place propped against a splashback or worktop wall, where the soft chalk glaze reads as a sculptural object rather than something waiting to be put away.
What sets it apart
The detail that makes it different
Serving boards are usually wood, and usually anonymous. The Amberley is stoneware finished in a reactive glaze, which means the glaze moves and pools in the kiln rather than sitting flat — the chalk tone deepens along the edges and around the handle, and no two boards come out identically. The edges are subtly uneven rather than machine-straight, and the surface carries the slight undulation of something shaped by hand. At just 1.2cm thick it stays elegant on the table and stacks easily in a cupboard. Ceramic also does something wood can't: it stays cool, so butter, soft cheese and cured meats hold their texture far longer on the table. Pair it with a smaller board or a stoneware bowl and the pairing looks collected rather than bought as a set.
Part of our bowls and dishes range — layer with pieces from our crockery collection for a table that looks gathered over time.
Good to know
What size is it?
The board measures 45.2cm long by 26cm wide, with a slim 1.2cm profile — long enough to run down the centre of a dining table or serve four to six comfortably, and slim enough to stack in a cupboard or lean on a worktop without dominating it. The length includes the cut-out handle.
Can I cut on it?
It's designed for serving rather than chopping. A knife blade will mark the glaze over time and blunt itself against the ceramic, so we'd suggest slicing on a wooden or plastic board and transferring across to the Amberley to present. Cheese knives and spreaders used lightly on the surface are fine.
Will each board look the same?
No, and that's the point. The reactive glaze responds to the heat of the kiln, so tone, depth of colour and the way it pools around the edges and handle vary from board to board. Slight irregularity in the outline and surface is part of the handmade character rather than a fault.
Is it dishwasher safe?
Hand washing is best. Warm water, a little washing-up liquid and a soft cloth is all it needs, and it keeps the glaze looking its best for far longer. Avoid abrasive scourers, and dry it before storing or hanging.
Can I hang it up?
Yes — the cut-out handle sits over a hook, peg rail or butcher's rail easily. As a solid ceramic piece it has real weight to it, so use a fixing rated for the load rather than a light adhesive hook.
Is it food safe?
Yes. The glazed surface is food safe and non-porous, so it wipes clean and won't absorb oils or odours the way an untreated wooden board can.
