Ambrose Ribbed Glass Vase

It weighs 3kg, and the mouth is 9.5cm across. Both of those matter more than they sound.

Most decorative glass vases at this height are light, thin-walled and top-heavy the moment you fill them. This one weighs 3kg empty, which means thick glass and a base that keeps a 34cm vase upright when it is holding water and a full bunch of stems. It is the difference between a vase you use and a vase you keep somewhere safe.

The 9.5cm mouth is the other half of it. A wide opening takes a supermarket bunch straight out of its wrapper without you having to thin it down, and it lets stems fall naturally into shape rather than forcing them into a stiff column. Narrow-necked vases photograph beautifully and hold almost nothing.

The ribbing runs the full body. On clear glass, ribbing is a texture. On dark glass it becomes something better: each rib catches light at a different angle, so the surface shifts between near-black and a lit edge depending on where you stand. It gives a plain form real depth.

There is a practical side to dark ribbed glass too, and nobody mentions it. It hides the waterline, the stem ends and the cloudiness that fresh flowers produce after a few days. Clear glass shows all three.

Cut stems to around 50cm and let them fall where they want to.

Stem length. The rule is roughly one and a half times the vase height for the finished arrangement, so aim for stems around 50cm from the rim upward. Cut them at an angle, and strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline.

What it holds. A 9.5cm mouth comfortably takes a supermarket or florist bunch as it comes. For a looser look, use fewer stems of something structural — eucalyptus, pampas, dried grasses — and let the ribbing do the rest.

On a dining table, 34cm sits above sightlines. Either accept that and use it as a centrepiece for a table nobody is talking across, or move it to a console when you are eating.

Allow for the width. 20cm at the body is wider than it looks in a photograph. On a narrow console or a shallow shelf, measure the depth first.

Three sad stems in a 34cm vase looks worse than nothing. Either commit to a full bunch or leave it bare and let the ribbing and the weight carry it. This is one of the few vases that genuinely holds a surface on its own.

On a console this is your tall element. Add a low bowl and a candle, and the group is done. Three objects at three heights, every time.

Ribbed glass is nothing in a dark corner and remarkable near a window or beside a lit table lamp. Position it where something can catch the ridges.

A dark vase needs contrast underneath it. On a pale timber console, a cream runner or a light stone surface it reads as deliberate. On a dark surface it disappears.

Nine times out of ten this will stand empty or hold something dried. A few good faux stems means it looks intentional in the eleven months you are not buying flowers.

Beside a mirror on a hall console, a tall dark vase is the piece that stops the surface looking like a place where keys accumulate.

Hand wash only. A dishwasher will dull a decorative glass finish over time and a vase this heavy is awkward in a rack anyway. Warm water and washing-up liquid with a bottle brush.

For stubborn residue, half fill with warm water, add a spoonful of uncooked rice and swirl. The rice scours the inside where a brush will not reach, and it is far gentler than anything abrasive.

Change the water every two days with fresh flowers and re-cut the stems. Dark glass hides cloudy water, which is a benefit for how it looks and a reason to be disciplined about actually changing it.

Empty it before a hard frost if it stands in a cold conservatory or porch. Water expanding as it freezes is the one thing that reliably cracks glass.

Lift it from the body, not the rim, especially when full. Three kilos of glass plus water is a serious weight.

What to expect. Small variations in the glass, faint seams and tiny bubbles within the body are characteristics of made glass rather than faults.
