An arch, not a rectangle. That is the whole difference.

A slim arch-topped photo frame in warm brushed gold, with a matching arched mount and a freestanding easel back.

The gentle arch echoes the shape of a window or a doorway, which gives it far more character than a standard rectangular frame. The brushed finish catches light with a soft glow rather than a hard shine. Browse all home décor.

Stylist's note

A photograph in a good frame is the only decorative object in a room that nobody else can buy.

The detail that makes it different

Most photo frames are purely functional. The Arncliffe is a design object that happens to hold a photograph.

The rounded-arch silhouette and matching arched mount give it a soft, architectural elegance, and the arch is repeated rather than applied once, so the shape reads as intentional rather than decorative. It is the same principle as an arched doorway or a window: a curve set into a room full of straight lines draws the eye immediately without needing to be large.

The finish is doing quiet work too. A fine brushed texture on the gold metal keeps it warm and tactile rather than flat or brassy, so it catches light softly instead of glaring. Polished gold reads as costume; brushed gold reads as considered.

The proportions are slim and refined, so the frame frames the photograph rather than competing with it, and the arched mount adds a generous gallery-style border around a portrait image. A sturdy easel back holds it at a comfortable angle on any surface.

Lovely on its own and better grouped. Cluster two or three at varying heights for a warm, collected shelf display, alongside a small lamp, a stack of books and a piece from our pots and vases range.

Why you will love it
  • Arch-topped silhouette that breaks up the straight lines every shelf is built from
  • Matching arched mount, so the shape is repeated rather than applied once
  • Brushed gold finish, warm and soft rather than bright and brassy
  • Generous 24 x 19cm photo size, large enough for a photograph to actually be seen
  • 32cm tall, substantial enough to hold a mantel rather than disappearing on it
  • Sturdy easel back that stands securely at a comfortable viewing angle
  • Glass front protecting the photograph
  • Groups beautifully, which is where framed photographs always look best
Size and what fits
The Arncliffe
H32cm/W27cm

Holding a photograph of 24 x 19cm within the soft-arch mount. That is a generous size for a freestanding frame, closer to a small piece of wall art than a desk photo, so it holds a mantel or a shelf on its own rather than needing company to register.

Best for

Mantelpieces, bookshelves, console tables, bedsides and desks.

Check your shelf depth. A freestanding easel back needs the frame to sit at an angle, so allow around 15cm of depth. On a narrow floating shelf the foot may hang over the back edge.

Photograph size. 24 x 19cm is close to A4 in one dimension, so a standard print will usually need cropping or ordering at size. Most print services offer 24 x 18cm or similar, which sits comfortably behind the mount.

Portrait only. The arch sits uppermost, so this is designed to stand upright rather than on its side.

How our stylists would use it
Group in odd numbers

One frame is a photograph. Three at varying heights is a display. Cluster them close rather than spacing them evenly along a shelf, and let them overlap slightly at the back for depth.

Vary the heights beneath

Stand one frame on a short stack of books and the others directly on the shelf. That difference in level is what makes a grouping look arranged rather than lined up.

Repeat the arch

An arched frame beside an arched mirror, or above a curved-edge console, ties a room together. Repeating a shape once or twice is what makes an interior look designed.

Let the gold connect

Brushed gold picks up warmth from brass elsewhere in a room. Repeat it in a lamp base, a handle or a wall light so the metal reads as a thread rather than a one-off.

Choose the photograph carefully

At 24 x 19cm the image is large enough to be looked at properly, which means a grainy phone snap will show. A good print at this size is worth the few pounds it costs.

Materials and craftsmanship

Brushed gold metal. A fine brushed texture worked into the surface, which is what keeps the finish warm and soft rather than mirror-bright. Brushed metal also shows fingerprints far less than a polished finish would.

Arched mount. The inner mount repeats the outer arch rather than sitting square inside it, which is a more considered piece of making and gives the photograph a proper gallery border.

Glass front. Protecting the photograph from dust and handling.

Easel back. Sturdy enough to hold a frame of this size securely at a comfortable angle. Freestanding rather than wall hanging.

Care

The metal. A dry soft cloth. Avoid metal polish and abrasive cleaners, which will lift the brushed texture and leave the surface unevenly bright.

The glass. Spray glass cleaner onto a cloth rather than onto the frame, so nothing runs down into the mount and reaches the photograph.

Placement. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which fades photographs faster than anything else in a home. A shelf away from a south-facing window will keep an image true for far longer.

Handle with care. A glass front and a metal frame are a poor combination with a hard floor, so take a moment when moving it.

Questions, answered
What photo size does it hold?
A photograph of 24 x 19cm, set within a soft-arch mount. The overall frame measures 32cm high by 27cm wide, so the mount gives a generous border around the image.
Does it stand up or hang?
It is freestanding, with a sturdy easel back that holds it at a comfortable angle on a shelf, mantel, desk or bedside table. It is designed to be displayed portrait, with the arch at the top.
What is it made from?
Metal in a warm brushed gold finish, with a glass front to protect the photograph. The brushed texture gives it a soft glow rather than a high-shine, brassy look.
Will a standard photo print fit?
24 x 19cm is not one of the most common print sizes, so you may need to order at size or crop slightly. Most print services offer 24 x 18cm or similar, which sits comfortably behind the mount.
How much shelf depth does it need?
Around 15cm, since an easel back holds the frame at an angle. On a narrow floating shelf the foot may overhang the back edge.
Can I group several together?
The arched shape looks especially good clustered. Group two or three at varying heights along a shelf or mantel, standing one on a stack of books so the levels differ.
Can it be hung on a wall?
No, this is a freestanding frame with an easel back rather than a hanging fixture. For wall pieces, see our art range.
Where does it work best?
The warm gold finish and arched shape suit modern, contemporary and lightly Deco-inspired schemes, and bring a soft point of shine to a shelf or mantel. It also makes a thoughtful gift, ready to hold a favourite photograph.
How do I clean it?
A dry soft cloth on the metal, and glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth rather than onto the frame so nothing runs into the mount.
Complete the look
Something with height beside a grouping of frames gives the arrangement its vertical element.
Warm lamplight on brushed gold is what makes the finish glow. Overhead light flattens it.
An arched frame beside an arched mirror repeats the shape, which is what makes a room look designed.
Grouping frames on a tray gives a shelf or console arrangement a defined border.
For the wall rather than the shelf, framed canvases and prints in the same neutral register.
The third element on a mantel. Candlelight and brushed gold in the evening is the pairing this frame was made for.
Where the rest of the small objects live, and a good place to start for gifting.
