Tall and comparatively narrow. Easier to place than a wide-shaded lamp.

The 38cm shade is modest for the height, which makes this considerably easier to place than a lamp with a wide coolie shade. A surface of 40cm deep takes it comfortably, where a 50cm shade would overhang.

Check the height above the surface. On a 75cm console the top of the shade lands at around 143cm from the floor, so measure against a wall-mounted mirror, a low shelf or a sloping ceiling.

On a console or sideboard this is the right scale for a piece of 100cm or more, and a matching pair at either end of a long surface is the most reliable arrangement there is.

On a bedside it will be tall. At 68cm it suits a generous bedside table in a large room; on a compact one a lamp of 45cm to 55cm sits better.

The fluting is deep, and the glaze is matt. Both of those are deliberate.

Shallow ribbing on a white lamp reads as nothing at all. Here the channels are cut properly, running the full height of the rounded body from the shoulder to the base, so each one throws a genuine shadow. That shadow is the entire reason the lamp has depth rather than reading as a white shape.

The matt chalk finish is the other half. A gloss glaze would reflect light back at you and flatten the fluting; a matt surface absorbs it and lets the shadows do the work. It also gives the ceramic a soft, slightly powdery quality that reads as plaster or unglazed stoneware rather than shiny pottery.

The form is a simple rounded column, drawing in at the shoulder to a short neck. No handles, no decoration, nothing but the fluting. That restraint is what lets it sit in a minimalist room as comfortably as a country one.

The white cotton drum shade keeps the piece tonally continuous, so the whole lamp reads as one form. A contrasting shade would break it into two objects.

A warm bulb at 2400K to 2700K. Cool white light on a white matt glaze is the worst possible combination: it turns the whole lamp grey and flattens the fluting completely.

A white lamp against a white wall disappears, fluting or not. Against olive, sage, clay or charcoal the silhouette reads and the shadows in the channels become the feature.

Fluting is made of shadow, so raking light reveals it. Daylight from a window or a second light source across the room does more for the base than the lamp's own bulb ever will.

Two matching lamps at either end of a long console or sideboard frames the surface and gives you low warm light from two points rather than one.

A matt fluted base wants something rough nearby rather than more smooth white. A basket, a timber surface or a jute rug stops a pale corner reading flat.

It takes an E27 screw fitting, the standard large screw bulb, up to a maximum of 40W. A bulb is not included, which means you choose the light rather than inheriting it.

The 40W cap makes this an ambient light rather than a reading one. On a console or a sideboard that is exactly right; beside a reading chair you would want a second source alongside it.

Go warm. 2400K to 2700K. Anything cooler makes a white matt glaze look grey and flattens the fluting entirely. This is the cheapest decision on this page and the one that matters most.

A note on LED wattage. The 40W maximum refers to traditional bulbs. An LED drawing 5W to 7W gives roughly equivalent light and runs far cooler, which is the sensible choice inside a ceramic base.

Go dimmable if the socket or a plug-in dimmer allows it. A fluted base turned low in the evening is when the shadows read best.

Dust the fluting with a soft brush rather than a cloth. Deep vertical channels hold dust in the troughs, and a dry paintbrush clears them in seconds where a cloth just moves it along.

A matt glaze needs care. It marks more readily than gloss and shows a scuff as a shiny patch rather than a scratch. A barely damp cloth on a mark, dried straight after, and nothing abrasive at all.

Never use water or cleaning spray on the shade. Cotton marks permanently. A soft dry brush, a lint roller or a hairdryer on the cool setting.

A white lamp shows everything. That is the honest trade for the colour, and a quick dust every couple of weeks is what keeps it looking as it did when it arrived.

Switch off and let the bulb cool before changing it or cleaning near the shade.
