Two techniques are doing the work here, and both are about depth rather than pattern.

The high-low pile. Rather than a single flat surface, the pile is cut at different heights across the design, so the pattern has genuine physical relief. You can feel it underfoot and you can see it from across the room as shadow rather than just print. It is what stops a machine-made rug reading as a photograph of a rug.

The space dyed yarn. Space dyeing colours a single strand in varying tones along its length before it is woven, so the finished rug carries subtle colour shifts throughout rather than flat blocks. It is the technique that gives the Cappadocia its faded, collected, vintage quality without anyone having to distress anything.

Together with the lustrous sheen, the result is a rug that looks different at nine in the morning and again at six in the evening. That change through the day is the thing photographs never quite convey.

Size is the decision most people get wrong with a rug, and it is nearly always by going too small.

The test for a living room: can the front legs of every seat reach the rug? If not, size up.

Front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug at minimum. All legs on is better if the room allows. A rug floating in the middle with everything off it is the single most common styling mistake there is.

Table footprint plus 60cm on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled back. Anything less and chair legs catch the edge every time someone sits down. A low 10mm pile is the right choice here, since chairs move over it easily.

Either one large rug with the bottom two thirds of the bed on it, or a runner down each side so your feet land on something soft. Both work. A small rug at the foot of the bed alone rarely does.

Leave an even margin of floor on each side and check the door swing before you commit. At 10mm the pile clears most internal doors, but measure yours.

The neutral palette and sheen sit naturally with warm timber, linen and aged brass. Layer with cushions and throws from our soft furnishings range rather than adding a second pattern on the floor.

Worth being straightforward about the material, because it matters in both directions.

The last two rows are the honest trade. Polyester does not have the natural warmth of wool underfoot, and in a very high traffic route it will show a path sooner than wool would. What you get in return is a rug that does not shed, holds its colour, shrugs off spills, and carries a sheen wool simply cannot produce.

100% space dyed polyester. The yarn is dyed in varying tones along its length before weaving, which is what gives the finished rug its subtle tonal shifts and faded vintage quality.

Power loomed in Turkey. Turkey has been a centre of rug making for centuries and remains one of the best sources for machine-woven rugs. Power looming gives consistency of finish and keeps a rug of this size at a sensible price.

High-low pile, 10mm. Cut at varying heights across the design for physical depth. At 10mm the overall pile is low enough to clear most internal doors and easy for dining chairs to move across.

Slight variation in tone between rugs, and between a rug and its photograph, is characteristic of space dyed yarn rather than a fault.

Vacuuming. Regularly, and without a rotating beater bar on the highest setting. A high-low pile has raised areas that a very aggressive brush will fuzz over time. Suction alone or a gentle setting is right.

Spills. Blot immediately with a clean dry cloth, working inward from the edge of the mark. Do not rub. Polyester releases most spills far more willingly than wool, so speed matters more than product.

Creases on arrival. Rugs are rolled for transit and will show fold lines. Lay it flat, let it settle for a few days, and reverse-roll it briefly if a stubborn crease persists. It settles.

Use an underlay. Not supplied, and worth buying. It stops the rug creeping on hard floors, protects the pile from crushing and makes the whole thing feel considerably better underfoot.

Rotate it. Every six months or so, particularly if one end sits in sunlight or takes more traffic than the other.
