Benches and Stools

Room for whoever turns up

A single thick plank of pale, weathered recycled elm on splayed trestle legs, with a stretcher tying each pair together. Pull it up to one side of the dining table and there is no more counting chairs. Discover more in our benches and stools collection.

Will it fit? At 50cm high it sits a little taller than most dining benches, so measure from the floor to the underside of your table apron first. If the apron clears 50cm, the bench slides neatly under the table when not in use. It looks best beside a table of 180cm or more.

Materials and finish

Recycled elm with a wandering grain, saw marks and old nail holes left as they were, in a pale weathered tone. The top is a single thick board, so the grain runs along the whole length.

The legs splay outward in an A frame, keeping the feet clear of where knees and legs go, and a stretcher joins each pair to give the ends their simple ladder rhythm.

Care and honest expectations

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills straight away, as a natural timber surface is more absorbent than a lacquered one. A clear furniture wax once or twice a year will nourish the wood. Avoid silicone polishes and all purpose sprays.

Keep it away from radiators and long spells of direct sun. As recycled timber, expect saw marks, nail holes, small splits at the board ends and plenty of tonal variation, and no two benches are the same. For indoor use only.

Styling and pairs well with

Set it down one side of a dining table with dining chairs opposite for a relaxed, collected look. In a hallway, add two baskets beneath, or place it at the foot of a king size bed.

Pale elm loves warm neutrals: off white, oatmeal, clay and mushroom, with a long linen cushion along the seat for lingering meals.

Suits farmhouse, country cottage and modern rustic interiors.

Questions

How many people does it seat?

Three adults comfortably along 177cm, or four at a squeeze.

Will it slide under my table?

At 35cm deep it will, as long as your table apron clears 50cm from the floor.

Is the top one piece of wood?

Yes, a single thick plank, so the grain runs the full length of the seat.

Will mine look like the photograph?

It will be recognisably the Chedworth, but the grain, marks and tone of recycled elm vary on every piece, so yours will be individual.
