Will it fit? Allow at least 60cm of clearance on every side for chairs, and ideally 90cm where people walk behind. That means a room of roughly 320 x 220cm as a minimum. At 200cm long, check doorways and hallway turns before ordering.

Chairs. Pair it with a seat height of 45cm to 50cm. A bench also slides along either side, because there is no corner leg in the way.

Solid elm, with a wandering, interlocking grain that is denser than pine and warmer than oak. Because it is solid timber rather than veneer, the top can be sanded and refinished for decades.

Waxed limewashed finish. The wax sinks into the wood rather than coating it, so the surface stays tactile and small scuffs can usually be waxed out at home.

Cross-leg base. Two X-frames joined by a low central stretcher carry the full span with no apron under the top. This leaves knee room at every seat and lets you see through the base. A chamfered edge softens the chunky top.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills promptly. Use mats and coasters under anything hot or wet, as marks show more readily on a pale top. Refresh with clear furniture wax once or twice a year, avoid silicone polishes, and keep the table away from radiators and strong direct sun.

Elm moves slightly with the seasons, and grain and tone vary from table to table. If you want a surface that stays exactly as it arrived, a solid waxed timber table is the wrong choice.

Mix a bench along one side with woven or linen dining chairs along the other. Hang two smaller pendants 75cm to 85cm above the top, and add one deeper note with dark glazed stoneware.

Warm neutrals such as chalk, oatmeal and putty flatter the pale elm. Use a runner rather than a full cloth so the grain stays on show.
