Smaller than a sheet of A4. That is the whole point of it.

This is a small piece and should be treated as one. Roughly the size of a postcard once you take the frame off. Hung alone in the middle of a wall it will look stranded; used properly it is one of the more useful things you can buy.

Leaning is the easiest use. On a shelf, a mantel, a console or a bedside, propped against the wall behind a stack of books or a small vessel. No fixings, no holes, and you can move it in ten seconds.

In a cluster, this is what small art is for. Three or five pieces at varying sizes, hung 5cm to 8cm apart, reads as a collection rather than a lone picture.

In a small room, a cloakroom or a narrow hallway, a piece this size is correctly scaled where anything larger would overwhelm.

The frame is doing more work than the print.

A twisted rope moulding runs around the inner edge of the frame, with a stepped profile in antiqued gold. It is a traditional picture-framing detail, and at this small scale it gives the piece a jewel-like quality that a plain moulding never would.

The antiqued finish matters too. A bright gold frame reads as new and slightly brash; this one is knocked back, with the gilt worn softly at the high points, so it looks like something found rather than bought.

The image is a soft pastoral landscape: open marshland with a channel of water running through it, a stand of trees to one side, distant treeline, and a great deal of pale sky. Muted greens, ochres and soft neutrals throughout, with the loose brushwork of nineteenth-century landscape painting.

The sky is roughly two thirds of the picture, which is what gives it its calm. A busy image at this size becomes a smudge from across a room; this one stays readable.

Three or five pieces at different sizes, with this as one of the smaller ones. Keep the gaps even at 5cm to 8cm and align one edge, top or bottom, so the group has a line to hang off.

A brass lamp base or a small metal object nearby picks up the frame without turning the room into a theme. One repeat is enough.

A muted landscape at this size disappears against a patterned wallpaper. Plain paint, ideally in a deeper tone than the sky in the picture, so the pale sky reads as light.

Small art rewards a close look, so it belongs where someone pauses. Beside a bed, in a cloakroom, at the end of a hallway rather than halfway along it.

Spray the cloth, not the frame. Any cleaner running into a decorative gold moulding will mark it, and a rope twist has plenty of places for liquid to sit.

Dust the moulding with a soft brush. A twisted profile collects dust in the grooves where a cloth cannot reach, and a dry paintbrush clears it in seconds.

Nothing abrasive on the gilt. An antiqued finish is a surface treatment, and scrubbing will take it back to the base.

Keep it out of direct sunlight. All prints fade, and a sunny wall shortens that considerably. Away from steam too, so not a bathroom.

If you lean it, a small piece of museum putty or a felt pad at the base stops it sliding on a polished shelf.

What to expect. Printed colour varies slightly from what a screen shows, and the antiquing on the frame differs a little piece to piece.
