It is the lid, and it is the size.

Almost every diffuser at this price uses a plastic or resin collar finished to look like stone. This one has a solid marble lid, and you notice the moment you pick it up. Marble is cold to the touch, heavier than it looks, and cut from natural stone rather than moulded, so the veining on your piece will not be identical to the photograph.

The bottle is glass, 12cm tall and 5cm square. That squat proportion with a weighted lid on top is what makes it work visually. It reads as an object rather than a bottle of liquid, which matters when it lives permanently on show.

And it is deliberately small. 120ml is not trying to scent an open plan kitchen. It is sized for a cloakroom, a bathroom shelf, a bedside or the corner of a dressing table, where a full-size diffuser is out of scale and too strong in a confined space.

The scent is the part people underestimate at this size. Fresh fig is green rather than sweet, which is exactly what a small room wants. Heavy florals and vanillas turn cloying in a confined space. A herbal fig stays clean.

Glass and polished marble both come alive near a window or a lamp. On a dark shelf it disappears. Beside a table lamp it reads as a considered object.

Small pieces need company. A diffuser this size works best in a group of three with something taller and something wider, a small vase and a low dish for rings.

On a basin or a cistern, a small tray turns three loose items into one arrangement and catches any drips when you turn the reeds.

Splay them into a loose fan rather than leaving them upright in a tight bundle. It looks better and it scents better, because the reeds are not touching.

Competing fragrances in adjoining rooms cancel each other out. Use the large fig on the hallway console and this one in the cloakroom, and the house reads as one thought rather than several.

A fig scent sits naturally with olive and eucalyptus. A small stem of faux greenery alongside it makes the connection without saying anything.

Turn the reeds every week or so, dry end down. That refreshes the throw. Turning them more often than that uses the oil faster without making the room smell better.

Wash your hands afterwards and keep the oil off polished and painted surfaces. Concentrated fragrance oil will mark wood and stone if it sits, which is the real argument for standing it on a tray.

Keep it out of direct sun and away from a radiator or a heated towel rail. Heat drives the oil off quickly and you lose weeks of life for nothing.

Wipe the marble with a dry cloth only. Marble is porous and does not like anything acidic, so no vinegar, no bathroom sprays and no wet wiping.

What to expect. The scent is strongest in the first fortnight and settles to a quieter level after that. Every reed diffuser does this. In a small room, the settled level is usually the one you want anyway.
