Over four feet tall. This is a full-size broom, not a table ornament.

Leaning is the easiest position. Propped against a wall beside a front door, a fireplace or at the end of a hallway, where the height does the work and nothing needs fixing.

Hanging is the other option. The rope loop at the top of the handle takes a hook, and at 1.25kg a standard picture hook or a simple wall hook will hold it comfortably.

Against a door, a broom this height sits nicely alongside a wreath rather than competing with one. Lean it in the corner of a porch rather than centring it.

Check the floor. Twigs on a hard floor can scuff, and a leaning broom slides. A rug, a doormat or a corner where it cannot travel is the sensible spot.

Most Halloween props at this size are moulded plastic or synthetic bristle, and they look it from three metres away. This is real birch twigs on a real birch handle, bound with hemp rope, which means the twigs splay irregularly, the colours vary along their length and nothing about it repeats.

The hemp binding is visible at the neck, wrapped in two bands where the twigs meet the handle. It is a functional detail rather than a decorative one, and it looks like it because it is.

That is also why it works past October. A natural twig broom reads as rustic, not just as Halloween, so it sits beside a fireplace through the winter rather than going back in a box. A plastic one has exactly one month of use in it.

Because the twigs are natural, no two brooms are identical in their splay or their tone, and yours will not match the photograph exactly.

A broom propped in a corner looks like it was put down. A broom centred on a wall looks like a display. The first is the effect you want.

On a front door, a wreath on the door and the broom leaning beside it is a complete arrangement. Two focal points on the door itself is one too many.

A couple of pumpkins, a basket or a lantern at the foot gives the broom something to belong to rather than standing alone against a wall.

Beside a fireplace or a log basket it reads as part of the room rather than a leftover from October. That is the whole argument for buying a real one.

The texture of the twigs only reads with raking light. A candle or a low lantern at the foot in the evening does more for it than an overhead fitting.

This is a decorative piece, not a working broom. Sweeping with it will loosen the twigs and shorten its life considerably.

Keep it sheltered. A porch or a covered doorway is fine; a fully exposed position in a wet autumn is not. Natural twigs and hemp rope both suffer in sustained rain.

Expect some shedding. Natural twigs drop a little, particularly when first unwrapped and when the broom is moved. A doormat or a hard floor you can sweep is a sensible position.

Keep it away from an open flame. Dry twigs and a real fire are a poor combination, so beside a fireplace means beside it, not against the hearth.

Store it standing or flat in a dry place between seasons. Hanging it by the loop for months will pull the twigs out of shape.

What to expect. The splay of the twigs, their length and their tone vary from broom to broom because the material is natural. That variation is the point rather than a fault.
