A two-handled amphora silhouette in a white crackle glaze — the shape of ancient Greek pottery, softened by a finish that looks quietly aged.
The Hambledon is a vase you'd keep even if it never held a stem. A rounded stoneware body drawn up into a long, flared neck, with two looped handles set at the shoulder in the manner of an ancient Greek amphora, finished in a white crackle glaze. The crackle is the character: a fine web of lines running through the surface that catches the light and gives the white real depth rather than a flat, modern brightness. Fill it with narcissi, tulips or a loose armful of garden stems and the long neck holds them upright without arranging; leave it empty on a mantelpiece or windowsill and it stands perfectly well as a sculptural object.

A plain white vase disappears; this one holds its place. The amphora shape does the work — a full, generous belly narrowing into a tall neck, which is exactly the profile that supports long stems and stops a bouquet splaying open the way it does in a straight-sided vase. The two handles are more than decorative: they make a 2.1-litre vase full of water genuinely easy to lift and carry from sink to sill. The crackle glaze varies subtly from piece to piece, so no two vases carry quite the same pattern of lines, and its softened white sits comfortably against every palette from limewash to deep green. Small foam pads on the base protect the surface it stands on.

What size is it?
The vase stands 23cm tall and measures 25cm by 20.5cm across including the handles, with a 13cm base, a 12cm neck and a 10.5cm opening. It holds 2.1 litres and weighs 2.38kg empty — a substantial mantel or windowsill size rather than a small bud vase.
Can I use it with fresh flowers and water?
Yes, it takes fresh stems and water as happily as dried or faux. Please note that stoneware is a porous material, so we can't guarantee the vase is fully watertight over time. We'd always recommend standing it on a coaster, placemat or cloth before setting it on a table, shelf or any other surface, and checking underneath from time to time.
Will each vase look the same?
No. A crackle glaze forms its own pattern of fine lines as it cools, so the density and direction of the crackle differ from vase to vase, as does the depth of tone. That variation is the character of the finish rather than a fault.
What stems suit it?
The 10.5cm opening and long neck suit tall, upright stems best — narcissi, tulips, alliums, delphiniums, grasses or long branches — holding them together without needing arranging. For shorter or heavier-headed blooms, a florist's frog or a little crumpled chicken wire in the neck gives them something to lean on.
How do I care for it?
Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry afterwards. If used with fresh flowers, empty and rinse between uses rather than leaving water standing. Avoid soaking, dishwashers and abrasive cleaners, all of which can work into a crackle glaze.
