Pale, open-grained oak set on scrolled cast iron — the honest pairing of a workshop shelf, made to be seen rather than hidden.
The Kelmscott is built around a deliberate contrast. A raw oak board with its grain and figure left visible, carried on decorative cast iron brackets in a dark, mottled finish that reads like reclaimed ironmongery. The oak is pale and untreated, so it warms and settles over time rather than staying flat; the brackets bring the weight and the detail, curling out from the wall and finishing in a rounded terminal beneath the front edge. It's a genuinely versatile shelf: books in an alcove, spices and oils above a worktop, frames and small pieces in a bedroom. Available in 55cm and 120cm, and the two look considered stacked one above the other.
What sets it apart
The detail that makes it different
Floating shelves hide their support; this one makes a feature of it. The cast iron brackets are the design, not an afterthought — solid, scrolled and properly weighted, in the language of Victorian ironwork rather than the flat steel angle most shelves are hung on. Because the support is visible and substantial, the oak board can stay slim at 2cm without looking flimsy. The timber is raw rather than lacquered, so the grain reads openly and takes on a light patina with use; oil or wax it if you want a deeper tone, or leave it pale. The neutral pairing of natural wood and dark iron sits as easily in a period kitchen as in a plain modern room, which is what makes it so easy to buy more than one of.
Part of our home décor range — style with ceramics and greenery from our pots and vases collection for a shelf that looks collected rather than arranged.
Good to know
What size are they?
The small shelf is 55cm wide with a 15cm deep board, projecting 19cm from the wall including the bracket. The large is 120cm wide with a 21.5cm deep board, projecting 25.5cm. Both boards are 2cm thick. The small suits spices, frames and a short run of books; the large spans an alcove or sits above a worktop.
Are the brackets and fixings included?
The brackets are supplied with the shelf. Wall fixings aren't included, because the right screw and plug depend entirely on your wall — masonry, plasterboard and lath and plaster each need something different. If you're fixing into plasterboard, use heavy-duty anchors rated well above the load you intend to put on it, or fix into the studs.
Do the two sizes look identical?
They share the same raw oak board and dark cast iron, but the bracket profiles differ slightly in scale and detail between the two sizes. Hung on the same wall they read as a considered pair rather than a matched set.
How much weight will it hold?
Cast iron brackets and a solid oak board are more than capable of carrying books, crockery or jars. In practice the limit is your wall and your fixings rather than the shelf, so choose fixings appropriate to the substrate and don't rely on plasterboard alone for a heavy load.
Can I use it in a kitchen or bathroom?
A kitchen, yes — it makes an excellent spice or crockery shelf. Bathrooms are less suitable: raw oak is untreated and cast iron can surface-rust, so sustained steam and damp will take a toll unless the room is very well ventilated and the timber is sealed first.
How do I care for it?
Dust the board and wipe with a barely damp cloth, drying afterwards. The raw oak can be left to age naturally or finished with a clear wax or hardwax oil for a slightly deeper tone and more resistance to marks. Keep abrasive cleaners away from the cast iron.
