The Sarah console, scaled for a narrower hallway.

Solid pine with a hand-applied weathered finish, classic turned legs, two drawers and a lower shelf.

Same character as the full-size Sarah, in a width that suits a narrow hall or a smaller entryway where proportion matters as much as style. See the full console tables and sideboards range.

Stylist's note

A console that is too big for the hall does not look generous. It looks like a mistake you have to walk past every day.

The measurements, and the wall you need

Sarah Small
W180cm/D45cm/H87.5cm

32.5kg, in solid pine. Two drawers and a full-width lower shelf.

Allow around 210cm of clear wall, so it has space at either end.

The depth is what makes it work in a narrow hall. At 45cm you get a usable surface without narrowing the route past it. Leave at least 90cm of walking space in front, which is the figure people forget when measuring a hallway.

The height is taller than a standard console, closer to a sideboard, which suits a hallway where you want the surface at a comfortable height to drop keys and post. It also works behind a sofa, where a lower table would disappear.

If you have more wall than this, the full-size Sarah is 241cm wide in the same finish and detailing. Worth comparing the two against your measurements rather than assuming smaller is safer.

Measure the route as well as the room. Doorways, hallway width and tight turns all matter. Tell us if anything looks close and we will help you work it out before you order.

The detail that makes it different

Solid pine, hand finished, so no two are the same.

The weathered distressed finish is applied by hand rather than machined, which draws out the natural grain, the knots and the individual character of each piece of timber. Manufactured distressing repeats itself in a way hand-applied wear never does, and that difference is visible from across a room.

The classic turned legs give it a farmhouse elegance that feels rooted in heritage without feeling dated. They sit naturally alongside linen, ceramic, faux greenery and a statement mirror above.

Two drawers take keys, post and sunglasses completely out of sight, which is the practical difference between a console that stays styled and one that becomes a dumping ground within a week.

And the lower open shelf gives you a second tier for baskets, books or a pair of ceramic vessels. On a smaller console this matters more, not less: it adds storage without taking up any additional floor space.

Why you will love it

  • Solid pine, hand finished, with knots and grain left visible
  • Hand-applied weathered finish rather than machined distressing
  • Classic turned legs with farmhouse elegance
  • Two drawers, so the surface above stays clear
  • A full lower shelf, adding storage without adding footprint
  • Scaled for smaller spaces, where the full-size Sarah would dominate
  • Shallow depth, so a narrow hallway stays walkable
  • No two alike, since the finish is applied piece by piece

How our stylists would use it

Lamp, height, lamp

A matching pair of table lamps at either end with something tall in the middle. It takes about a minute and it is the most reliable console arrangement there is. Warm bulbs at 2400K to 2700K, since a hallway is usually the worst-lit room in a house.

Or lamp, mirror lean, bowl

On a smaller console, an asymmetric arrangement often reads better than strict symmetry. A lamp at one end, a small mirror leaning at the back, and a bowl for keys at the other.

Use the shelf, do not fill it

Two baskets with a gap, or a basket at one end and books at the other. Filling the whole shelf makes a turned-leg console look heavy.

Hang something above it

A mirror or a run of framed pieces. A console beneath an empty wall always looks bottom heavy, and a mirror in a hallway doubles what little light there is.

Let the timber lead

Weathered pine wants warm neutrals. Off white, oatmeal, clay and mushroom. Add texture in linen, rattan or a jute runner underfoot rather than adding colour.

Care and honest expectations

Wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth, and use coasters. Pine is a softwood and absorbs liquid readily.

Dust with a soft dry cloth along the grain. Avoid acidic liquids and abrasive cleaners, both of which will lift a hand-applied finish.

Keep it clear of a radiator where you can, and out of prolonged direct sun, which lightens timber unevenly.

What to expect. Natural imperfections, knots, variation in the distressing and small differences in tone are the character of a hand-finished piece rather than faults. Yours will not match the photograph exactly, and that is the reason to buy it.

Pine marks more readily than oak, but on a piece already defined by weathering, everyday marks blend into the character rather than standing out.

Questions, answered

How much wall does it need?
See the measurements at the top of this page. Allow around 210cm of clear wall so it has space at either end, and at least 90cm of walking room in front in a hallway.
How is it different from the standard Sarah?
The width. This is the smaller of the two, in the same solid pine with the same turned legs, two drawers and lower shelf. The full-size Sarah is 241cm. If you have the wall for it, compare both against your measurements.
Does it need assembly?
Minimal assembly, with fixings and instructions included. Given the scale and weight, we recommend two people for assembly and positioning.
Is it solid wood?
Yes, solid pine with a hand-applied weathered finish. The knots, grain and tonal variation you can see are the timber itself rather than a printed effect.
Will it work behind a sofa?
Yes. The height is taller than a standard console, so it reads properly behind a sofa where a lower table would disappear. Check the height of your sofa back before ordering.
How big are the drawers?
They are sized for everyday essentials rather than deep storage: keys, post, sunglasses and the small things that otherwise accumulate on the surface. Get in touch if you need the internal measurements.
Will it look exactly like the photograph?
No, and that is the nature of a hand-finished piece. Grain, knots and the depth of the distressing vary from table to table, so yours will be recognisably the Sarah but individual in its detail.
Will it mark?
Pine is a softwood, so yes, over time. On a weathered finish everyday marks blend into the existing character. Wipe spills straight away and use coasters, since absorbed liquid is the one thing that does not settle in.
Can I use it as a desk or dressing table?
Not comfortably. The height suits standing rather than sitting, so it is too tall to work at with a standard chair.
How is it delivered?
It travels with our specialist furniture courier, who will contact you to arrange a time. Measure doorways, stairwells and tight turns beforehand. Current timescales and charges are on our delivery page.

Complete the look

A pair at either end, or one at a single end for a less formal arrangement.
Hung or leaning above. A mirror doubles hallway light and fills the wall behind.
For the lower shelf. Two with a gap between them, rather than filling the run.
Height for the centre of the surface. One good piece beats three small ones.
The keys bowl, for whatever does not make it into the drawers.
A runner along a hallway warms a hard floor and grounds the console.
Something living-looking on a hallway console, where a real plant rarely gets enough light.
