Sedgemoor Scallop Baskets, Set of Two

Two large woven storage baskets with a scalloped cloud edge. The rare kind that look better full than empty.

Hand-woven banana fibre over an iron frame, in warm natural tones. 65cm and 55cm across, with rolled handles. Log store, blanket basket, toy chest, or a cover for your potted plants and trees.

Our styling note

A basket is the only piece of storage that improves a room by being visible.

Why we chose them

The scallop is the whole reason. Take it away and these are two ordinary round baskets.

Most large woven baskets are cylinders. These are shaped into a soft cloud profile, five rounded lobes that catch light differently on every face and give a flat wall or a fireplace alcove something to look at. Getting that curve to hold across a 65cm diameter is the hard part, which is why an iron frame runs inside the weave.

The material earns its place too. Banana fibre weaves thicker and warmer than seagrass, with visible tonal variation from pale straw through to soft chestnut. It reads as texture from across the room rather than as flat brown, which is why it sits so easily alongside the rest of our home décor.

Sizes and what fits
Large
H53cm/DIA65cm

Genuinely large. This is the one for logs beside a wood burner, a full family throw collection, or covering a 50cm plant pot. It will also take a duvet.

Best for

Log storage, blankets, large floor plants.

Small
H48cm/DIA55cm

Still substantial. Suits toys in a living room, laundry in a bedroom, or a smaller potted tree. Nests inside the large one for storage when not in use.

Best for

Toys, laundry, kindling, medium plant covers.

Use them together. Placed side by side with the small slightly forward, the height difference reads as deliberate. Both are wide, so allow a clear 70cm of floor for the pair. See the full storage trunks, boxes and baskets range if you need a third.

Ways to use them
Log basket

The most popular use, and the depth suits it. Keep it a short distance from an open fire or stove and never use it to carry hot embers.

Blanket and throw storage

Beside a sofa, rolled rather than folded. Rolling means people actually put things back.

Planter cover

Drop a potted plant straight in, still in its plastic nursery pot, and lift it out to water. Add a waterproof liner or a saucer first. Never plant directly into the weave. Our pots and vases range covers the smaller sizes a basket cannot.

Toys and laundry

Deep enough to swallow the contents of a living room floor in under a minute, and handsome enough to leave out afterwards.

Materials and craftsmanship

Banana fibre. Hand-woven in Indonesia from banana stem fibre, a fast-renewing natural material and a by-product of fruit farming. The tonal variation from straw to chestnut is natural to the fibre and not a printed finish.

Iron frame. A concealed iron structure runs through the body and rim, which is what holds the scalloped shape and stops the basket collapsing as it is loaded.

Rolled handles. Bound handles on opposite sides, sized for two hands. The large basket weighs a fair amount once it is full of logs, so lift with both.

These are hand-woven, so no two are identical. Weave density, tone and the exact set of the scallops will vary slightly between pieces, which is the point.

Care and honest expectations

Keep them dry. Natural fibre and damp do not mix. Vacuum with a brush attachment or wipe with a barely damp cloth, then dry immediately. Never soak or machine wash.

Indoors only. These are not weatherproof. A covered porch is the furthest we would take them, and not through winter.

Loose fibres are normal. Hand-woven natural fibre sheds the odd strand in the first weeks. Trim with scissors rather than pulling.

Colour. Direct sunlight will lighten the fibre over years, evenly rather than in patches. Most people prefer it as it softens.

Questions, answered
How big are they?
The large is H 53cm with a 65cm diameter. The small is H 48cm with a 55cm diameter. Both are wide, so measure your floor space before ordering.
Is this a set of two?
Yes. Both baskets are included in the price shown.
Can I use one as a log basket?
Yes, and the large size is well suited to it. Keep it a safe distance from an open fire or stove, and never place hot ash or embers inside.
Can I plant directly into it?
No. Use it as a cover for a plant still in its nursery pot, and add a waterproof liner or saucer underneath. Soil and water will rot the fibre. Browse our pots and vases if you need something plantable.
Are they lined?
No, they are unlined. If you are storing delicate textiles, a fabric liner or a cotton bag inside is worth adding.
Do they nest together?
The small sits inside the large, which is useful for storage between seasons.
Can I use them outside?
They are made for interior use. Rain and frost will damage natural fibre quickly, and the iron frame can mark once moisture gets in.
How much weight will they take?
The iron frame gives them real structure, comfortably enough for a full load of logs or blankets. Lift with both handles rather than one, particularly when full.
Will they look exactly like the photograph?
Very close. These are hand-woven, so tone and weave vary slightly from piece to piece. Two baskets in the same set will be siblings rather than twins.
How do I clean them?
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment, or wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away. Avoid soaking, sprays and cleaning products.
How long is delivery?
Allow 10 to 14 days. Full details are on our delivery information page.
Complete the look
A basket cover is the fastest way to make a plastic nursery pot look intentional. The large size suits a floor-standing tree.
Stoneware and ceramic beside woven fibre gives you two natural textures without repeating either.
Trays, throws and warm metal accents finish the corner these baskets sit in, rather than leaving them working alone.
Delivery and buying with confidence

Both baskets ship together and we will keep you posted along the way. See our delivery information for full details.

If the scale is not right once they are in the room, get in touch. These are wider than people expect and we would rather help you swap than have them sit unused.
