A warm cinnamon glaze, a raw unglazed rim at the foot and the faint spiral of the wheel still visible — mugs that look like they came from a potter rather than a production line.
The Thornbury is the pair you'll reach for every morning. Two wheel-thrown stoneware mugs in a warm cinnamon glaze, gently tapered, with a generous looped handle and a band of raw, unglazed clay left around the base. That raw rim is the detail that gives them away as properly made: the glaze stops short of the foot, exposing the clay body beneath, exactly as it would on a studio piece. Being spun on a wheel leaves a subtle horizontal texture running around each mug, so the light sits on them unevenly and the colour shifts slightly from top to base. At 380ml they're a proper mug — a full cup of coffee, not a polite one.
What sets it apart
The detail that makes it different
Most mugs are slip-cast, identical and glazed to the base. These are spun on a wheel, which means each carries the faint concentric throwing lines of the process and no two are precisely the same weight, height or depth of colour. The cinnamon glaze is warm rather than orange, sitting somewhere between terracotta and caramel, and it reads beautifully against dark cabinetry, green tiles or a plain wooden table. The handle is wide enough to take a whole finger rather than pinching, and the exposed clay at the foot gives a little grip on a saucer or worktop. Sold as a pair and presented in a brown display box, so they work as a gift without needing wrapping.
Part of our crockery range — layer with pieces from our kitchen and dining collection for a table that looks gathered rather than bought as a set.
Good to know
How many do I get?
Two — they're sold as a set of two mugs, presented together in a brown display box.
What size are they?
Each mug holds 380ml and stands 9cm tall by 10cm across, with the pair weighing 0.5kg boxed. That's a generous everyday size — a full mug of coffee or tea rather than a small cup.
Can they go in the microwave or oven?
No. These mugs aren't oven or microwave safe, so warm your drink first and pour it in rather than heating it in the mug.
Will each mug look the same?
Not exactly, and that's the appeal. Each is spun on a wheel, so slight variation in height, weight, texture and depth of glaze is to be expected between the two in your set — part of the handmade character rather than a fault.
Does the raw base mark surfaces?
The unglazed clay at the foot is slightly more textured than the glazed body, so on polished or delicate surfaces we'd suggest a coaster. It's also a little more porous, so dry the base properly after washing rather than leaving it standing wet.
How do I care for them?
Hand washing is kindest to a wheel-thrown glaze and keeps the colour at its best. Use warm water and a soft cloth, avoid abrasive scourers, and dry the raw base thoroughly before putting them away.
