A 70cm woven jute pendant on an antique brass chain.
A wide tapered drum shade in natural jute, hand woven over an iron frame, suspended on a chain with a 1.6m total drop.
70cm across is a statement rather than a light fitting. This is the pendant you hang over a dining table and build the room around. Browse all pendant lights.
Most people hang a pendant too small and too high. Go bigger than feels right and lower than feels safe.

The measurements, and hanging it
Woven jute over an iron frame, on a chain suspension.
6.5kg on a 70cm shade. This needs a joist or a proper fixing.
The weight is the first thing to check. At 6.5kg this is well beyond what a plasterboard ceiling will hold on its own. It needs fixing to a joist or to a suitable support, and it should be installed by a qualified electrician.
Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the shade 75cm to 85cm above the tabletop. Lower than feels natural is almost always right, because it lights the table rather than the room.
The table should be wider than the shade. At 70cm across, this suits a table of 100cm wide or more. On a narrow table it will overhang and people will knock their heads getting up.
The 1.6m total drop is the maximum, including the chain and rose. A chain suspension shortens easily by removing links, so a standard 2.4m ceiling is straightforward. Check with your electrician before ordering if your ceiling is unusually low.
In a hallway or a walkway, allow at least 210cm of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the shade.
The detail that makes it different
Jute wound over an iron frame, not a printed fabric drum.
The shade is wound in natural jute cord, laid closely in vertical passes over a formed iron frame, so the surface has the irregularity and slight tonal variation of a natural fibre rather than the flatness of a printed shade. Up close you can read the individual strands.
That construction is also what makes the light so good. A wound fibre shade glows rather than blocks, letting a warm diffuse light through the weave at the sides while throwing most of it downward. The effect in the evening is considerably softer than a solid shade gives.
The tapered drum profile, wider at the base than the top, is what stops a shade this size reading as a cylinder hanging in the room. It also directs more of the light downward onto the table.
The chain and rose are antique brass toned, which keeps the suspension as part of the design rather than something to hide. On a 1.6m drop that visible chain is a good deal of what you are looking at.
Why you will love it
- 70cm across, a genuine statement rather than a light fitting
- Hand wound jute over an iron frame, with the irregularity of natural fibre
- A shade that glows, letting warm light through the weave at the sides
- Tapered drum profile, throwing more light down onto the table
- Antique brass chain and rose, part of the design rather than hidden
- A 1.6m drop that shortens easily by removing chain links
- Standard E27 fitting, so bulbs are easy to find and cheap to replace
- Natural neutral, sitting with timber, linen, rattan and stone
Bulbs, and getting the light right
It takes an E27 screw fitting, the standard large screw bulb, up to a maximum of 25W. A bulb is not included.
The 25W cap is low, which matters on a shade this size. In practice that means an LED: an LED drawing 8W to 10W gives roughly the output of a traditional 60W bulb while staying well within the limit, and it runs far cooler inside a natural fibre shade.
Do not exceed 25W with a traditional filament bulb. Jute is a natural fibre and heat inside the shade is the one thing to respect here.
Go warm. 2400K to 2700K. Cool light through a jute weave turns the fibre grey and loses the whole reason for choosing a natural shade.
Go dimmable if the circuit allows. Over a dining table a pendant turned low in the evening is what the fitting is for.
Consider the bulb shape. At 30cm deep the shade hides a standard bulb entirely, so there is no need for a decorative filament unless you want one visible from below.
How our stylists would use it
The commonest mistake with a dining pendant is hanging it too high. 75cm to 85cm above the tabletop looks low when you fit it and correct the moment someone sits down.
At 70cm this is a single-pendant fitting. Three of these over an island would be overwhelming; one centred, or two on a very long table, is the arrangement.
Jute is a strong texture. Keep the table below it plainer than you otherwise would, and let the pendant be the thing with character in the room.
A jute rug underfoot or a woven basket in the corner ties the pendant in. Once, not throughout.
Natural jute wants warm neutrals around it: off white, oatmeal, clay and mushroom. Against a cool grey scheme the fibre reads yellow rather than golden.
At a glance
Care and honest expectations
Dust with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment. A wound fibre shade collects dust between the strands, and a brush clears it where a cloth will catch and pull.
Nothing wet on the jute. Natural fibre softens and marks when damp, and a shade cannot be taken off and washed.
Respect the 25W limit. Heat inside a natural fibre shade is the one genuine risk with a fitting like this, and an LED removes the question entirely.
Have it installed properly. 6.5kg needs a secure fixing into a joist or suitable support, and the wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
Interior rooms only. IP20 means no protection against moisture, so not a bathroom, a covered porch or a conservatory that gets condensation.
What to expect. Jute varies in tone across the weave and between pieces, and a hand-wound shade will show small irregularities in the laying of the cord. Both are the material working as intended rather than faults.
