The height is the figure that matters. 30cm across is the one to think hard about.

Match the height to your seating. A side table wants to sit level with or within a few centimetres of your seat height, which for most sofas and chairs means 45cm to 60cm. Against a low modern sofa this may sit slightly proud, which is usually more useful than slightly low.

30cm is genuinely small. Roughly the size of a dinner plate, which suits a drink, a book and a candle rather than a lamp and a stack of magazines. If you need a working surface, this is the wrong table.

Almost no floor footprint. Four slim legs mean it slots into a gap of 35cm or so, where a table with a solid base or a wide plinth would not go at all.

The raised edge is the practical detail most side tables leave out.

A shallow lip runs right around the top, formed rather than added on, so a glass, a candle or a mug cannot slide off. On a small surface where everything sits close to the edge, that matters far more than it would on a large table.

The four slim iron legs give a clean, architectural silhouette that reads as deliberately slight rather than flimsy. Iron takes a fine section without flexing in a way most materials would not at this scale, which is why the frame, legs and top are all the same material.

At 3.6kg it has enough weight to sit firmly on the floor and is still light enough to lift with one hand. That balance is deliberate on a table meant to be repositioned, and it is what makes it genuinely useful across a day rather than a fixed piece of furniture.

The finish is properly matte rather than satin or semi-gloss, so the table reads as a graphic line in a room instead of a reflective object competing for attention. Black also coordinates with everything: warm timber, linen, rattan, ceramic and concrete all sit beside it without clashing.

A drink, the remote and a candle within reach. On a two-seater with no room for a proper side table at all, this is often the only thing that fits.

Compact enough for a small bedroom or a spare room where a full bedside table would crowd the bed. Room for a book, a glass and a phone, though not for a large lamp.

A room built on warm neutrals needs one darker element to stop it reading flat. A matte black side table does that job quietly, without the commitment of a dark sofa or a painted wall.

This is a working surface rather than a display one. One or two things and clear space. A small table styled to within an inch of its life leaves nowhere for the cup it exists to hold.

Smooth matte iron beside something woven or timber is a better pairing than iron beside more metal. A jute rug underneath or a rattan chair alongside gives the contrast.

Two of them side by side make an unexpectedly good coffee table for a small room, and you can separate them when you need to. Set at slightly different positions rather than lined up square.

A top this size does not comfortably take a lamp and a cup. A floor lamp beside the chair, or a wall light above, keeps the surface free.

Wipe with a soft dry or barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, which will mark a matte finish and leave shiny patches.

Use a coaster. The raised edge stops a glass sliding off, but a wet base will still leave a ring on the surface over time.

Matte shows marks differently. Fingerprints are less visible than on gloss, but a scuff or a scratch shows as a lighter mark rather than blending in. Take care sliding heavy things across the top.

Protect your floor. Four slim legs concentrate weight onto a small footprint, so felt pads are worth adding on timber or vinyl, particularly since the table is designed to be moved.

Interior use only. Iron marks in damp conditions, so not one for a conservatory that gets condensation or a covered porch through winter.
