Which sofa does it suit? A coffee table should be about two thirds the length of the sofa, so this one suits a three seater of around 220cm to 260cm. In front of a two seater it will look oversized.

Spacing. Leave 40cm to 45cm between the sofa and the table. On a rug, the whole table should sit on it, which usually means a rug of at least 200 x 300cm.

Reclaimed pine in a weathered natural finish. Knots and grain variation are left as they fell rather than filled or sanded away, so every table differs and yours will not match the photograph exactly.

Hand-turned balustrade legs have a depth of profile a plain leg never achieves, which matters on a table seen from all four sides.

Use coasters. Reclaimed pine is absorbent, and a wet glass left standing will leave a ring that does not blend in.

Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills promptly. Apply a clear furniture wax once or twice a year, avoid silicone sprays, and keep the table away from radiators and strong direct sun.

Pine is a softwood, so scratches and knocks will build up and settle into the existing character. If you want a table that stays exactly as it arrived, reclaimed timber is the wrong choice.

Style it in three loose groups with the middle left clear: books with a small object on top, a tray with a candle, and something living at the far end.

Warm pine wants warm neutrals such as off white, oatmeal and clay. Dark glazed stoneware from pots and vases anchors the amber timber, and cushions in olive, sage or terracotta bring in colour.
