Linen Slipcover Dining Chair

Measure the apron, not the tabletop. The arms are what has to clear it.

The arms at 68cm are the point of contact, not the back. Measure to the underside of your table apron and compare. At 68cm or more the chair tucks fully away; less, and it sits a little proud of the edge, which is usual with a slipcovered chair and does not affect how it is used.

The seat sits at 46cm, the standard dining height, leaving 27cm to 33cm of clearance under tables of 73cm to 79cm. That is also a workable height at most desks.

Allow around 60cm of table edge per chair so the linen skirts sit beside one another without crushing. A 180cm table comfortably seats six, three along each side, or four with a chair at each end.

The floor-length drape is the whole idea. Everything else follows from it.

The cover encases the frame completely, falling past the seat and down to the floor rather than stopping at the rail the way conventional upholstery does. With no legs on display and no hard structural edges, the chair reads as a soft vertical shape instead of a piece of engineering. Set six around a table and the room feels calmer immediately.

It also solves a problem upholstered dining chairs have always had. Dining rooms are where life gets messy, and fixed upholstery makes that a worry. Here the cover lifts away from the frame, so the chair is far more practical to live with than its elegance suggests. It is a design used in French country houses for generations for exactly that reason.

100% linen is why the chair behaves as it does. Linen has weight and a slight irregularity in the weave, so it falls into soft vertical folds rather than hanging flat the way a synthetic blend would. It is also breathable, which matters more than people expect on a chair you sit in for two hours at a time.

There is comfort underneath the tailoring: a foam padded seat, a gently curved backrest and low arms, on an engineered plywood frame. Plywood is the standard for upholstered seating because it stays dimensionally stable in a heated home where solid timber can shrink or split, and it holds a fixing securely over years of use.

And the restraint is deliberate. No stud detail, no button back, no contrast piping. The interest comes from the fall of the fabric alone, which is why it will still look right in ten years when sharper, more decorated chairs have started to date.

Very few dining chairs work anywhere other than the dining room. This one does, because the floor-length silhouette and neutral linen give it the presence of an accent chair rather than a dining set component.

In a bedroom it becomes a dressing table chair, or a single chair in the corner with a folded throw over the back. In a study it softens a hard-working room, and the seat sits at the right height for most desks. On a landing it works alongside a console table as a considered pause rather than a piece of furniture waiting to be sat on.

At 8.5kg it is light enough to move between rooms on a whim, which is more than can be said for most dining chairs. Buying two for the table and one for elsewhere is a perfectly sensible way to start.

Slipcovered chairs want a little space around them. If the room allows, pull the table 90cm clear of the walls so the linen skirts can be seen in full when the chairs are pushed in. In a smaller room, use them on the long sides only with a bench or two carvers at the ends.

Natural linen sits most beautifully against warm off whites, soft putty, oatmeal, mushroom and stone. For more depth, olive, sage and muted clay all work without competing. Avoid a cool brilliant white on the walls, which makes natural linen read grey rather than warm.

A pendant hung 75cm to 85cm above the tabletop catches the texture of the weave, while a table lamp on a nearby sideboard picks out the fall of the fabric in the evening. Warm bulbs at 2400K to 2700K, since cooler light flattens linen completely.

A reclaimed timber tabletop, an aged brass pendant, a stoneware vase and a jute or wool rug underfoot. One rough texture, one polished, one matt is the rule we use.

Washed linen napkins, a run of small ceramics, a shallow bowl of foliage and a pair of candles. The chairs are the styling here, so the table can afford to do less.

The cover is dry clean only. Please do not machine wash it, however tempting the removability makes that sound. Natural linen shrinks when laundered at home and will not go back onto the frame with the same tailored fall, and the drape is the whole point of this chair.

Vacuum monthly with an upholstery attachment, and blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth rather than rubbing. Most lift.

A light steam on the lowest setting restores the drape when the skirt has creased. Dry clean every 12 to 18 months to preserve colour and hang.

Keep it out of strong all-day sun, which fades any natural fibre over several years.

What to expect. Soft creasing across the seat and skirt after use is normal, and the fabric softens in the hand through the first year. Small differences in tone and weave between covers are a characteristic of natural fibre rather than a fault, so if you are ordering several, order them together.
