The Coleford is the most useful thing in a room precisely because it refuses to be one thing. At 48cm across and 60cm tall it lands at chair-arm height, which is the height a side table actually wants to be: high enough to reach without leaning, small enough to tuck into the gap beside an armchair that nothing else fits. The round top is turned from solid elm with the grain running right across it, and the three splayed legs meet in a cross stretcher that gives the piece its stability and most of its character. It arrives fully assembled and finds a use in every room of the house.

The height is what makes it work. Most side tables sit at 45cm, which is fine next to a low sofa and awkward everywhere else — you reach down and across for a cup. At 60cm the Coleford meets a chair arm rather than sitting below it, so a drink, a book or a lamp is simply there at hand. The round top removes the corner problem entirely, letting it sit close to seating without a sharp edge at shin height, and the solid elm construction gives it a weight and grain that turned pine or veneered alternatives cannot match: an open, expressive figure that reads as a piece of timber rather than a piece of furniture. The cross-stretcher base is traditional joinery, not decoration, which is why a table this narrow does not rock.
