The writing desk that makes a home office feel like somewhere worth working
Reclaimed pine, turned legs with crossbar support, five drawers and a weathered natural finish.
A writing desk with genuine character rather than the flat-pack anonymity most home offices settle for. 135cm of generous working surface on a frame that reads as crafted rather than assembled. Browse the full furniture collection.
Nobody ever worked better at a desk they did not want to sit at.

The detail that makes it different
The crossbar between the turned legs is the detail that lifts this above a plain desk. It is structural and it is architectural, both at once.
That horizontal stretcher connecting the legs adds real rigidity, which matters on a desk you lean on daily, and it makes the under-desk area as considered as the surface above. Most desks give you four posts and a void. Combined with the turned leg profile, the frame here reads as genuinely crafted rather than assembled, and gives the piece the presence of something that belongs in a room rather than simply occupying it.
Then the timber. Reclaimed pine brings the depth of grain, warm amber tones and natural weathering that new wood cannot replicate, and the distressed natural finish preserves that history rather than sanding it away. A desk surface takes daily use, so this is one of the few pieces of furniture where a weathered finish is an outright practical advantage. Marks blend in rather than standing out, and the surface develops further patina with every year of working at it.
Crafted from reclaimed pine, sustainably sourced timber given a second life. Grain variation, knots and the subtle marks of the timber's previous life are inherent qualities that make each Kensington entirely its own.
Why you will love it
- Five drawers, which is considerably more storage than most writing desks offer
- 135cm working surface, wide enough for a laptop, a monitor and paper at once
- 78.5cm height, comfortable for most adults with a standard 45cm to 50cm chair
- Turned legs with crossbar, giving rigidity and a properly finished under-desk
- Reclaimed pine with grain and knots no new timber can replicate
- Weathered finish where everyday marks blend in rather than standing out
- Only 55cm deep, so it fits a spare room or a landing where a bigger desk will not
- 28kg, light enough for two people to reposition without a fuss
- Genuinely unique, since no two pieces of reclaimed pine are the same
Size and setting it up
Weighing 28kg. At 78.5cm the surface sits at a comfortable working height for most adults paired with a chair of around 45cm to 50cm seat height. The 55cm depth is enough for a laptop or a monitor with keyboard space in front, while staying slim enough to fit a spare room, a landing or an alcove that a 70cm office desk would overwhelm.
Home offices, spare rooms, bedroom corners, landings and studies.
Chair clearance. Allow 90cm to 100cm behind the desk so a chair can be pushed back and got out of comfortably. Also check the crossbar position against your chair, since a stretcher between the legs can sit where you would otherwise put your feet.
Which chair. Look for a seat height of 45cm to 50cm against the 78.5cm surface. Many of our dining chairs sit in that range, and a smaller accent chair works if you want something softer for a bedroom study.
Position it near a window if you can. Side light is far kinder to work under than light from directly in front or behind, which either glares on a screen or throws your own shadow across the page.
How our stylists would dress it
A single overhead fitting is what makes a home office feel like an office. A table lamp at the back corner of the desk gives you warm light on the working surface and makes the room usable in the evening. Warm bulbs of 2400K to 2700K, as cool light flattens a weathered finish completely.
The point of five drawers is that the top can be nearly empty. A lamp, a tray for the small things, one vessel with foliage, and working space. A cluttered desk in reclaimed pine just looks like a cluttered desk.
A run of art or a mirror above the desk stops a home office feeling like a corner you were exiled to. If the desk faces a wall, this matters more than anything else in the room.
Warm amber pine wants warm neutrals. Off white, oatmeal, clay and mushroom. For depth, deep olive or a soft charcoal behind the desk gives a study genuine atmosphere. Cool grey drains the warmth from reclaimed pine and pushes it towards orange.
A rug under a desk quietens a chair on hard floors and defines the working zone in a room that also does something else.
Not only a desk
At 135cm by 55cm, the Kensington does several jobs beyond the obvious one.
A dressing table. The height suits it, the five drawers take everything a dressing table needs, and a mirror above completes it. In a bedroom this is often the better use.
A hallway console. At 55cm deep it is shallower than most sideboards, and five drawers in a hallway is a great deal more useful than an open console.
A homework table. Wide enough for two children side by side, and a surface where marks genuinely do not matter.
Which is worth knowing if the home office ever moves. This is not a piece that becomes redundant when the working pattern changes.
Materials and craftsmanship
Reclaimed pine. A softwood with an open, expressive grain, which is exactly why it takes patination so well. Decades of previous use leave a depth of colour and a knot structure no kiln process replicates. Being softwood it marks more readily than oak, and on a desk with a weathered finish that is a feature rather than a problem.
Weathered natural distressed finish. Applied to preserve the timber's history rather than to imitate it. Knots and grain variation are left where they fell rather than filled or sanded away.
Turned legs with crossbar support. The same architectural leg detail used in writing desks and library furniture for centuries, and it remains as structurally sound as it is beautiful. The legs are shaped individually, which gives them a depth of profile that pressed alternatives never match.
Colour and character vary from the photographs. Grain, knots and the pattern of weathering differ from piece to piece because the timber is genuinely reclaimed. That variation is the material working as intended.

Care and honest expectations
Everyday care. Dust along the grain with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit. Reclaimed pine is more absorbent than a lacquered new-wood surface.
Use a desk pad if you write by hand. A weathered surface has slight texture to it, which is beautiful to look at and less ideal directly under a sheet of paper. A leather or felt pad solves it and looks right on this desk.
Coasters and mats. Under mugs, and under anything hot from a laptop or a printer.
Refresh with wax. A clear furniture wax once or twice a year nourishes the timber and deepens the tone. Avoid silicone polishes and all purpose sprays, which build up and dull the surface.
What to expect. Reclaimed pine moves slightly with the seasons and the finish continues to develop. Marks accumulate and, on a piece like this, add to it. If you want a desk that stays exactly as it arrived, reclaimed timber is the wrong choice.
