Most ceramic table lamps lean one of two ways. Either high-gloss glazed and decorative, or rough, dark and rustic. The Hadleigh sits between them.

The base is finished in a soft, unglazed terracotta with visible tonal variation and the faint marks of hand-shaping, so each piece reads as genuinely made rather than mass-produced. But the silhouette itself is restrained. A clean, rounded vase form with no ornament and no pattern, which is what lets it sit in a modern room as readily as a traditional one.

The terracotta also gives the lamp real mass at the base. That matters more than it sounds on a sideboard or a bedside, where a slim metal lamp simply feels insubstantial. Meanwhile the pale linen shade keeps the upper half visually light, so the piece has presence without weight.

The antique brass at the neck and finial picks up the warmth from the clay below and ties the lamp to brass details elsewhere in a room. Handles, picture frames, kitchen taps. It is a small amount of metal doing a lot of connecting work.

And the white linen drum shade with its rolled hardback edge keeps the whole thing current rather than country cottage. Terracotta with a patterned or coloured shade would go somewhere quite different.

Measure the depth, not just the width. A 40cm deep console or a narrow shelf will leave the shade hanging over the front edge. The terracotta base has presence, so this suits surfaces with a bit of depth behind them.

On a bedside table. Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit near shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed. At 61cm this suits a nightstand of around 50cm to 60cm. See bedside tables.

Total height matters. Add the lamp to the surface it stands on. On a 90cm console the top of the shade reaches 151cm, so check nothing is hanging directly above.

In pairs. On a console of 160cm or more, two Hadleighs at either end frames the piece properly. Below that, one placed off centre reads better than a squeezed pair.

This matters more than anything else on the page, because on a terracotta lamp the bulb decides whether the clay glows or goes flat.

Around 2700K. A warm white bulb is what brings out the sandy tone in the terracotta. Cooler bulbs make the clay read flatter and greyer than it should, which is the single most common reason a beautiful lamp disappoints once it is home.

A single E27 screw fitting, up to a maximum of 100W. Bulb not included. An LED equivalent is what we would use, and it keeps the heat down inside a hardback shade.

A dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer, or a smart bulb, gives you one lamp that works for reading and for atmosphere.

If you buy two, use identical bulbs. Two different colour temperatures on a console is immediately visible and looks like a mistake.

The rule we work to. A table lamp, something low, and an overhead you rarely switch on. A single ceiling fitting is what makes a living room feel like an office after dark.

The neck and finial are the detail that ties this lamp into a room. Repeat that antique brass once or twice elsewhere, in a mirror frame, a handle or a wall light, and the whole scheme reads as deliberate.

Warm terracotta wants warm neutrals. Off white, oatmeal, clay, mushroom and warm plaster. Against a deep olive or charcoal wall the pale shade reads beautifully as contrast. Cool grey fights the orange undertone and is the one to avoid.

Terracotta is matt and porous, so pair it with something glazed and something woven. A vessel from pots and vases, a stack of books, and a tray for the small things.

Symmetry is what makes a console look considered. Two lamps give you warm light from two points rather than one, which is far more flattering than a single source.

Unglazed terracotta base. Fired clay left unglazed, which is what gives it that matt, sun-baked surface and the tonal variation across the body. Being porous is the trade for that finish, and it is why the base should be kept away from water. The faint marks of hand-shaping are part of the intended look.

Antique brass neck and finial. Aged rather than bright, so the metal sits warm against the clay rather than jumping out of it.

Steel internals. The structural element inside a lamp with a clay body, giving it stability and holding the fitting securely.

White linen drum shade. Hardback construction with a rolled edge, which is what keeps the drum perfectly circular rather than softening out of shape over time. Linen diffuses light warmly and softly, with no hard edge.

Because the terracotta is hand finished, tone and texture vary from piece to piece. If you are buying a pair, order them together so they come from the same batch.

The terracotta. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or a soft brush. Avoid wet cloths and cleaning sprays entirely, as unglazed clay is porous and will absorb moisture and stain. This is the one care instruction that genuinely matters here.

The shade. A soft dry brush, a lint roller or a hairdryer on the cool setting. Never water or spray on a linen shade, as it marks permanently. A white shade shows dust sooner than a coloured one.

The brass. Dry cloth only. Metal polish will strip an antique finish back to bright metal in patches.

Placement. Indoor use only, and away from damp. Not a lamp for a bathroom or a conservatory that gets condensation, since porous clay and humidity are a poor combination.

Handle with two hands. A clay base is solid but not forgiving of a knock off a surface edge.
