Turned oak pegs below, a slim shelf above - two pieces of hallway storage doing the work of one, on a single fixing.
The Wickham is the piece that quietly solves a wall. A raw oak peg rail with neatly turned pegs set along its face and a slim shelf running above them, so bags, coats and tea towels hang below while keys, post and small pieces sit on top. It's a combination that occupies no more wall than a peg rail alone but does twice as much, which is exactly why it works in the places that never have enough room — a narrow hallway, the gap beside a back door, above a worktop, on a utility wall. The oak is left completely untreated, so it's ready to use as it is, or to paint or stain to match a room.
What sets it apart
The detail that makes it different
A peg rail hangs things; a shelf holds things; most walls have room for one. The Wickham combines both on a single backboard with one set of fixings, which means less wall taken, fewer holes drilled and a cleaner line than mounting two separate pieces one above the other. The pegs are turned with a rounded head, the traditional shape that stops a strap or loop sliding off, and they project 5.5cm — enough for a coat, a bag or a couple of tea towels. The shelf is a shallow 8cm, deliberately: deep enough for keys, a small bowl, a propped print or postcard, shallow enough that it never becomes a dumping ground. Left raw, the oak takes paint or stain readily, so it can either disappear into a wall colour or stand as pale timber against it.
Part of our home décor range — pair with woven pieces from our baskets and storage collection for a hallway that stays tidy without looking bare.
Good to know
What size are they?
Both sizes stand 9cm high and project 9cm from the wall. The small is 40cm wide, the large 80cm. The pegs project 5.5cm and the shelf is 8cm deep. The small suits a narrow hallway, a back door or above a worktop; the large spans a proper coat wall or a utility run.
How much weight will each peg hold?
Each peg is rated to 2kg. That's comfortable for coats, bags, aprons, tea towels, hats and dog leads. It isn't intended for heavy winter coats loaded onto a single peg, or for anything you'd swing your weight on — spread the load across the pegs rather than concentrating it on one.
Are wall fixings included?
No — fixings aren't supplied, because the right screw and plug depend entirely on your wall. We recommend fixing to solid masonry only. Plasterboard alone isn't suitable for a peg rail that will take daily pulling, so if your wall is stud, fix through into the timber studs behind it.
Can I paint it?
Yes. The oak hasn't been treated or finished, so it takes paint, stain, wax or oil straight from the box. A light key with fine sandpaper and a suitable primer is all it needs before painting. Left bare, it will warm gently in tone as it ages.
Can I use it in a bathroom or outdoors?
It's for indoor use only. Untreated oak absorbs moisture, so a steamy bathroom or an outdoor wall will mark and warp it unless it's properly sealed first. Hallways, kitchens, utility rooms and bedrooms are all ideal.
How do I care for it?
Wipe with a damp cloth and dry afterwards. Avoid soaking the timber or using abrasive cleaners. If you'd like a little more resistance to marks, a clear wax or hardwax oil deepens the tone slightly and wipes clean more easily.
