Leave 90cm of walking space in front so the room still functions, and 40cm to 45cm between the sofa and a coffee table so you can reach a cup without standing.

The coffee table should be about two thirds the sofa length, so around 140cm suits this.

Measure the route in, not just the room. At 210cm wide and 94cm deep, doorways, hallway turns and stairwells all matter. A sofa this size cannot be angled round a tight corner the way a chair can. Tell us if anything looks close and we will work it through before you order.

The 50cm seat height is slightly higher than average, which most people find easier to get out of than a low modern sofa. It also sits above the height of many side tables, so check yours against it.

In an open plan space, pull the sofa off the wall with a console behind it. That is what defines a seating zone in a room with no walls to do it.

The front legs should sit on the rug. For a sofa this size that usually means 200 x 300cm as a minimum. A small rug floating in front is the most common styling mistake there is.

Plump the feather backs regularly. Feather cushions need it, and five minutes a week is the difference between a sofa that looks inviting and one that looks tired. This is not optional on a feather-filled piece.

Vacuum with an upholstery attachment fortnightly, getting into the seams where crumbs collect.

Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, working inward from the edge. Do not rub. A polyester blend releases most spills far more willingly than pure linen would, which is a real advantage on a pale sofa.

Rotate the seat cushions if one end takes all the sitting. Wear evens out and the sofa lasts considerably longer.

Keep it out of strong direct sun, which fades any upholstery over years, and away from a radiator.

What to expect. Feather backs flatten through the day and need plumping. Foam seats soften and ease in the first year. Both are the materials behaving correctly rather than faults.
