No two bases are identical. The speckle distributes differently across each piece, giving every lamp a subtle individuality that mass-produced alternatives cannot replicate. The ceramic has a satisfying weight and solidity to it, which is why at 3.7kg it sits with real confidence rather than needing to be handled carefully every time you reach past it.

The natural linen shade is not an afterthought. Linen diffuses light warmly and softly, with no harsh edges and no clinical brightness. It is the difference between a room that is lit and a room that is atmospheric, and it is why the shade material matters as much as the base you can see.

Bedside height. As a guide, the bottom of the shade should sit at roughly the height of your shoulder when you are sitting up in bed, which usually means a bedside table of around 55cm to 65cm. Too low and the bulb is in your eyeline when reading.

On a console. A 50cm lamp is the right scale for a console of 100cm or more. On a long console or sideboard, a matching pair at either end is the single most effective thing you can do with the surface.

Reach a socket. The flex is 1.3m, which is generous but not unlimited. Check the distance from your surface to the nearest socket before ordering.

This matters more than anything else on this page. Fit a warm bulb of 2400K to 2700K. Anything cooler turns linen grey and drains the warmth straight out of the ceramic. Maximum 60W, and an LED equivalent is what we would use.

Symmetry is what makes a console or a sideboard look considered. Two matching lamps at either end frames the surface and gives you low warm light from two points rather than one.

The rule our stylists use. A table lamp, a floor-level or shelf light, and something overhead you rarely switch on. A single ceiling fitting is what makes a room feel like an office in the evening.

Warm sandy ceramic wants warm neutrals. Off white, oatmeal, clay, mushroom and putty. Against a deeper olive or charcoal wall the speckle reads beautifully. Cool grey is the one to avoid, as it makes the sandy tone look muddy.

Give ceramic something to play against. A stack of books, a tray, a dark glazed vessel from pots and vases, and something living or faux from potted plants and trees. Group at varying heights rather than in a line.

Speckled ceramic base. Hand-finished, which is why the flecking falls differently on every piece. The speckle is worked into the glaze rather than printed on the surface, so it has depth to it when the light catches at an angle.

Natural linen shade. Chosen for how it handles light rather than for pattern. Linen has enough weave irregularity to soften a bulb without dimming it, and it warms the tone of the light as it passes through.

Standard E27 fitting. The common large screw fitting, so replacement bulbs are easy to find and you can choose your own warmth, brightness and whether it is dimmable or smart.

Small variations in speckle pattern and in the tone of the linen are characteristic of hand-finished natural materials rather than faults. If you are buying a pair, order them together so they come from the same batch.

Never use a damp cloth or cleaning spray on the linen shade. Water marks fabric shades permanently, and a dry brush is all it needs. The ceramic base can take a barely damp cloth on a mark, dried straight after.

Switch the lamp off and let the bulb cool before changing it or cleaning near the shade. This is an indoor lamp only, and not one for a bathroom or a conservatory that gets condensation.
