The sofa for people who want to live on it without worrying about it
A fully removable ochre slipcover, a floor-length skirted base and a right-hand chaise across 310cm.
A fixed-upholstered sectional at this scale demands professional cleaning in situ and careful daily management. The Portland's cover comes off, gets cleaned, and goes back on, without the sofa ever leaving the room. Browse all sofas.
A skirted base is what separates a sofa you sit on from a sofa a room is built around.

The detail that makes it different
The loose slipcover changes everything about how you live with a large sofa.
On a fixed-upholstered sectional, a spilt glass of red is a phone call to a specialist and an afternoon of someone working on your sofa in your living room. Here, the whole cover comes off and goes back on, freshened and clean, without the sofa moving an inch.
The floor-length skirt is the Portland's most distinctive visual quality. The fabric draping to the floor conceals the base entirely, which gives the sofa a relaxed, graceful character that a sofa on exposed legs cannot achieve. It reads as an old Provençal farmhouse sofa and a contemporary slipcover brand at the same time. Traditional in its skirted form, modern in its sectional format and ochre palette.
The colour is doing real work too. A rich, earthy camel-ochre that photographs beautifully and looks better still in a room, adding warmth against stone floors, natural wood and the full range of neutral palettes. It is the tone that makes the practicality feel luxurious rather than merely sensible.
Underneath, a foam, fibre and feather fill gives the cushions the layered specification of the best sectional sofas. Resistance from the foam, give from the fibre and loft from the feather, working together rather than one material trying to do all three jobs.
Why you will love it
- Fully removable slipcover, so the cover leaves the room for cleaning and the sofa does not
- Floor-length skirted base that conceals the frame and softens the whole silhouette
- 310cm of seating with a right-hand chaise, genuinely enough for a family
- 155cm chaise depth, a usable lounging surface rather than a token extension
- Foam, fibre and feather fill for support, give and loft rather than one flat sensation
- Warm camel-ochre tone that flatters stone floors, natural wood and neutral schemes
- Nothing to vacuum under, which anyone with a legged sofa will appreciate
- Practicality that does not look practical, which is rare at this scale
Size, layout and access
Weighing 99kg, in an L-shape with a right-hand chaise. This is a large sofa and it needs a large room. Allow 310cm along the main run and 155cm out from the wall for the chaise leg, plus 90cm of walking space in front so the room still functions. As a working minimum, that means a room of roughly 430cm by 340cm.
Generous living rooms, open plan spaces and family snugs where the sofa is the room.
Right-hand chaise, explained. Sit on the sofa facing out into the room. The chaise extends to your right. If your room needs it on the other side, check whether a left-hand version is available before ordering.
Measure the route in, not just the room. At 310cm and 99kg this is the single hardest thing to get into a house on this page. Check doorway widths, hallway turns, stairwell corners and ceiling height on the stairs. Tell us your access route before you order and we will help you work it out.
Living with a slipcover
This is the part people ask about most, so here it is plainly.
The slipcover is loose rather than fixed, so it lifts away from the frame. Work section by section rather than trying to remove everything at once, and note which piece goes where as you go.
Spot clean for everyday marks, and use a professional clean for the whole cover. We would not recommend putting a cover of this size through a domestic machine, as shrinkage means it will not go back on with the same tailored fit.
Refit the cover while it is still very slightly damp rather than bone dry. The fabric has a little give when damp, which makes it far easier to work over the frame and gives a noticeably crisper finish once it dries in place.
Vacuum with an upholstery attachment, plump the cushions and rotate the seat cushions where the layout allows. Ten minutes a fortnight keeps a large sofa looking considerably better than it otherwise would.
How our stylists would dress it
Ochre is a warm, saturated tone, so give it calm around it. Chalk, oatmeal, putty, mushroom and warm plaster walls all let the sofa lead. For depth, a soft olive or deep charcoal behind it is superb. Avoid cool grey, which fights ochre and makes it look mustard rather than earthy.
Do not match the ochre. Contrast is what makes a coloured sofa look intentional. Cream, oatmeal, olive and a single deeper terracotta work well. Odd numbers, varied sizes, and no more than five across 310cm. See our cushions.
A large rug that runs under the front legs of both sections. On a sofa this size a small rug floating in front of it is the fastest way to make a big room look badly planned.
A table lamp at the end away from the chaise, and something low on the other side. Warm bulbs of 2400K to 2700K keep the ochre rich rather than pushing it yellow.
A console table behind the long run is one of the best uses for a floating sectional in an open plan room. A coffee table in front should sit around 40cm to 45cm high, roughly level with the seat.
Slipcovered against fixed upholstery
| Portland slipcover | Fixed upholstered sectional | |
|---|---|---|
| Cover removes for cleaning | ✓ | ✗ |
| Cleaning happens in your living room | ✗ | Usually, yes |
| Floor-length skirt conceals the base | ✓ | Rarely |
| Relaxed, softened silhouette | ✓ | Depends on the frame |
| Layered foam, fibre and feather fill | ✓ | Varies by price |
| Taut, tailored, showroom-crisp look | ✗ | ✓ |
| Cover needs refitting after cleaning | Yes, a job in itself | ✗ |
The last two rows are the honest trade. A slipcover sits softer and slightly more relaxed than fixed upholstery, and refitting it is a proper task rather than a five minute one. What you get in return is a large sofa you are not afraid of.
Materials and construction
Ochre linen-look fabric, 100% polyester. Worth being clear about, because it matters both ways. This is a linen-look weave rather than linen itself, which means it holds colour better, creases far less and stands up to family use more robustly than real linen would at this scale. If you specifically want natural fibre, this is not that fabric.
Fully removable loose slipcover. Not a fitted cover stretched over the frame, but a tailored loose cover that lifts away in sections.
Foam, fibre and feather fill. Foam gives the resistance that stops a cushion collapsing, fibre gives the give, and feather gives the loft. Feather-containing cushions need plumping to look their best, which is normal rather than a fault.
Plywood and pinewood frame. Plywood is used throughout quality upholstered seating because it stays dimensionally stable in a heated home where solid timber can shrink or split, and it holds fixings securely over years of use.
At a glance
Care and honest expectations
Two honest notes. A slipcover sits softer than fixed upholstery by design, and it will relax a little between refits. Smoothing it down as you pass is part of owning one, and if you want permanently taut upholstery this is the wrong sofa.
Second, refit the cover slightly damp rather than fully dry. It goes on far more easily and dries into a crisper fit. Do not machine wash a cover this size at home, as shrinkage will stop it fitting properly afterwards.

Ordering with confidence
Your sofa travels with our specialist furniture courier rather than a general carrier, and they will call ahead to arrange a time that works around you. Allow 10 to 14 days. Full details on our delivery page.
Before you order, talk to us about access. At 310cm and 99kg this is a piece where the route into the house matters as much as the room it is going in, and we would far rather work that through with you beforehand. Reach us via our contact page or live chat.
If it is not right once it is in the room, our returns process is straightforward, and everything is covered by our guarantees and warranties.
0% interest-free finance is available at checkout, and our price match promise stands if you find the same piece for less elsewhere. Furnishing a holiday let or a project? Ask about trade accounts.
Three metres of sofa you can actually relax on. The cover comes off, so the worrying stops.
