Butternut Salt & Pepper Shakers

Telling them apart: the two shakers look alike, so the holes at the shoulder do the work. The salt has fewer holes and the pepper has more.

Made from ceramic in a ribbed butternut squash form, with a curled stem at the top. The cream glaze carries vertical streaks of sand and ochre that follow the ribs, so each shaker has its own gentle variation.

Filled through a stopper in the base, with the pouring holes at the shoulder.

Hand wash only, and dry thoroughly inside and out before refilling, as any moisture will cause the contents to clump.

Fine salt and finely ground pepper flow best through the holes. A few grains of dry rice in the salt shaker help stop it clogging.

Take a little care with the curled stem, which is the most delicate part of the piece.
