Will it fit? The leaves sit in roughly the top third, with bare branch below, so it suits a tall vase of 35cm to 45cm at close to full length. The branches spread outward, so allow a little width around it.

Finely cut, papery acer leaves with five to seven serrated lobes, in soft green flushing through coral and dusty rose, with each leaf at a slightly different stage. The open, horizontal branching follows the layered way a Japanese maple grows.

A bendable wire core lets you open out the side shoots, and the long bare lower stem can be trimmed with secateurs.

Dust with a hairdryer on a cool setting rather than a cloth, which can catch the fine leaves. Handle gently, do not stand in water, and keep out of strong direct sunlight, which can fade the coral and rose tones over time.

It arrives with the branches folded, so take a few minutes to bend the side shoots outward and slightly down after unpacking.

One or two stems in a tall, pale vase is all it needs, with the branches angled apart to interlace. Cream or stone glazes let the soft colours sing, while a plain wall shows off the outline of each leaf. It pairs beautifully with our burgundy ninebark stem for contrast.

No. With the soft green still doing half the work, it sits happily in a room all year.

Yes. There is a long bare section to trim. Use secateurs or wire cutters, as the stem has a wire core.

How many stems do I need?

One or two in a tall vase. The open branching is its charm, and crowding it loses that.

Does it need water?

No, and it should not be stood in water.
