Will it fit? At 13cm across it is wider than most candles, so check the depth of a narrow mantel or shelf before ordering. Allow at least 30cm of clear space above it when lit.

The vessel is stone and glass rather than thin pressed glass, which gives the candle its 2.34kg weight, a steady footing on any surface and a presence worth keeping once the wax has gone.

Top: pink pepper, bright and faintly rosy. Heart: cedar wood, dry and clean. Base: patchouli, earthy and resinous. A dry, grown up warmth rather than a sweet one, lovely in an evening room and from autumn onwards.

On the first burn, let the wax melt right to the edge of the vessel before putting it out, which takes a few hours at this size. Trim the wick to about 5mm before every burn, and burn for no more than four hours at a time, away from draughts.

Never leave it burning unattended, and keep it away from children, animals, curtains and anything that can catch. Stand it on a heat resistant surface, allow at least 30cm of clear space above, and stop burning when around 10mm of wax remains. For indoor use only.

Give it the mantel, off to one side of a mirror, or make it the tall element on a coffee table beside a low bowl and something green. A tray beneath protects the surface and gathers the arrangement together.

Once the wax has gone, the vessel makes a lovely holder for brushes, matches or a small plant. Arrives in a fitted box, ready to give.

How long does it burn for?

Approximately 60 to 70 hours. Trimming the wick before each burn and letting the first burn reach the edge will help you get the most from it.

What does it smell like?

Warm and spiced. Pink pepper at the top, cedar wood through the middle and patchouli underneath, dry and woody rather than sweet.

Is it too strong for a small room?

It is a large candle, so in a very small room burn it for shorter spells until you know how it sits. In a living or dining room it is well judged.

Does it come boxed for a gift?

Yes. It arrives in a fitted box and can be given exactly as it comes.
